So, nobody cares and you don't have the local history and reference to "get it"… but our farm flooded this morning. Entirely. Around the new house - it didn't come inside - and basically the entire 15 acres short of the 150+ yr old farmhouse which has a raised yard, and the old milk/dairy barn stayed dry. Everything else… the whole damn creek was running through the farmyard. We got all of the outdoor animals safe, short of a few barncats that are hopefully hiding in a hayloft… and the chickens/ducks. My sister couldn't get to their coop - the water was hip high on her. They DO have higher up roosts so hopefully some of them were smart. Ummm… but yea. We've lived here almost 35 years - never had anything like this. One of the local old-timers said he saw it higher once "when he was a boy." It's going down now. But the sky is still spitting big fat rain in bursts. Don't know if water got into the cars. Lots of tools and equipment completely lost in one of the other barns that got washed through.

And it's FINE. It's fine. There's definitely some equipment/tools/machinery loss in one of the barns, some damage like to the dog kennel and I think we lost some solar panels… but the animals are all(?) ok (haven't officially counted foul yet, and one cat unaccounted for but she disappears for days at a time anyway) and IT'S FINE IT'S FINE but - there is huge stress and anxiety in my body from just getting through it and seeing the water surrounding us and being up to my knees in water going out to bring my dog into the house - and IT'S FINE but I would really like to just have a good cry and flush it all out of my system but I literally fucking CAN'T because WE'RE FINE so it DOESN’T REALLY MATTER and I don't DESERVE to cry.

@harriehq Climate change deniers, especially those in public office, equate to criminally negligent manslaughterers.

And they need to face accountability in courts for it!

How climate change worsens heatwaves, droughts, fires and floods

Rising global temperatures mean extreme weather events are becoming more common and more intense.

@ArenaCops

I haven't had a calm enough brain to really work through this yet - but it had struck me even in the midst of the crisis - it doesn't matter "how much rain" we got. There have been larger systemic land-management issues occurring throughout the Great Plains that made something change between the big flood of 1993 where we were barely effected vs NOW when an albeit large but not unheard-of rainfall caused an unprecedented flash flood.

And I really don't know what to do with that knowledge except scream.

@harriehq Manmade preventable disaster. Destruction of natural refuges like wetlands for frequently or occasionally occuring floods, or straightening of rivers may lead to catastrophes like the one you mentioned.

That's sadly what happens, when greedy speculators or ignorant developers falsely assume that profits could ever trump nature, which has always pushed its way through as long as this planet has been existing.
Some people may just be too dumb to learn & some people are just too greedy to comply with the lessons of history & nature.
That's essentially, why it's damn necessary to have the regulations antisocially disordered oligarchs like Musk are so fiercely opposing, obstructing and/or sabotaging.
Potentially at the cost of human lives & existences.

What's needed is a strong, smart, considerate & caring state — in short, not a Corruptican-dominated swamp of political prostitutes serving American oligarchy, but a true representation of all the people!

@harriehq yikes! I'm just north of you in Lincoln Ne and it was bone dry until the storm overnight. I can absolutely see how that caused floods further down the watershed. Good luck with the recovery and I hope the cats and ducks are ok!
