The B in splines means Basis, a mathematical term going way back to 19 th centuary.

The term B-Spline is newer and the definition is beyond my tiny mind:
"A B-spline is defined as a piecewise polynomial of order n {\displaystyle n}, meaning a degree of n − 1 {\displaystyle n-1} "

@mbt3d @metin Wikipedia's math pages are always obtuse. They want to be rigorous, concise, and thorough, and that doesn't work to explain concepts.

If you're interested in the types of splines and their math (big if), I recommend this video. It explains things a little slower, with helpful animations throughout.
