The B in splines means Basis, a mathematical term going way back to 19 th centuary.

The term B-Spline is newer and the definition is beyond my tiny mind:
"A B-spline is defined as a piecewise polynomial of order n {\displaystyle n}, meaning a degree of n βˆ’ 1 {\displaystyle n-1} "
