Did you know you can eat broccoli leaves? #gardening #homegrown #vegetables

@Lizette603_23

Are they good?

@JackMexa4 They are delicious. I treat them like Napa Cabbage.....stir fry with onions and garlic, spices if you like. Really tasty
@Lizette603_23 and conversely, you can eat kale flowers. And they frequently taste at least as good as sprouting broccoli
@Cetraria I wish I could choke down Kale. I haven't been able to yet.
@Lizette603_23 @Cetraria have you tried Kale chips? Just coat the leaves with oil and roast until crispy.
@Zodypop I'm definitely not likely to do all that for something I already don't like the flavor of lolol
@Zodypop @Lizette603_23 the kale varieties I grow are much, much sweeter/less bitter, and with a texture less like shoe leather than what I find in stores. It's mild enough to eat raw in salads. No need for extensive cooking!
@Lizette603_23 Kale by another name!
@etp Not for me, friend, by taste they are quite different to me.
@Lizette603_23 Fair enough. Not identical, but in the same ballpark, no? I also like broccoli stems, thinly sliced, as long as they aren't too woody.
@etp Well they could be the same genus and still taste different to different people. I wish I loved all veggies, but there are a few I can't stand! Lima beans still make me ball my fists up and say no no no no.
@Lizette603_23 A lot of people don't like Lima beans./ It does make me wonder if there's something genetic about it, like with cilantro.
@etp My take on it is twofold....as a kid, frozen or canned limas are even worse than fresh....that gets imprinted, and then most people overcook vegetables in general, which turns some, i.e. limas, into wet cardboard lolol YUCK
@etp Yes, broccoli stems peeled sliced and sauteed are delish
@Lizette603_23 they're cooked like & taste similar Kale, to the point where I don't see much of a point in growing both, but rather I prefer to separate them out, when I'm freezing & reheating them, from the florets & stems.
@BrahmaBelarusian Interesting they don't taste like kale at all to my palate. Different strokes different folks, eh?
@BrahmaBelarusian I blanch them all before freezing and store chunky with chunky and leafy with leafy.
@Lizette603_23 they're delicious! And the stalks make great vegetable stock for soups & stews.
@WanabeSelkie I use them in all those things. As far as possible I use all of any plant that's edible. I can't choke down Kale though lol and I dislike lima beans intensely. Texture thing.
