i love that thing that mastodon has where i don't see the hot take a bunch of people i follow are mad at, because there isn't anything artificially drawing attention to rage bait to get us to look at ads or inflate stock prices or astroturf political campaigns or growth hacking or whatever other reasons for corporate engagement farming
and no i am not going to clarify "what happened", this is an evergreen opinion that transcends any specific online beef
you can just hate somebody on here because you want to not because you have to, and i think that's beautiful
@aeva great for me as a hater who does it for the love of the game honestly
@halcy automation can't take this from us
@aeva you don't even have to let them know
@aeva Rosemary generic beef?
@aeva I think the incentive runs the other way even? The instance admin would be *paying* for those clicks

@aeva this is what Twitter on third party apps was like back before the muskrat. 😔

I’m glad other people appreciate it. Some people are so algo brained that they can’t conceive of a platform that doesn’t shove things in your face. How will they get attention?! How will they find content?!

Slowly, and organically is how.

@aeva Seriously. "Oh, hm, that's the third mention of that I've seen today. I could probably chase that thread. Or not! Instead of getting rage-baited, there are, like, thirty hot bishi anime men on my timeline today from that one artist I follow. That's a much better use of my doom-scrolling."
@aeva I coudn't care less about the rage bait but sometimes I would appreciate more context about the subtoots
@oblomov someone i don't know posted something that ticked off a bunch of people, and there's been an occasional trickle of posts and boosts about it with varying degrees of nuance. other breaking news: the pope is still catholic, and bears still shit in the woods.
@aeva also cause nobody boosted it, only the dunk tanks were boosted

@aeva

not sure about trending tab, which most people see when browsing without an account.

(@Gargron is it the same trending feed for everyone, or does it apply analytics to change it for specific viewers?)

but as a user specifically, i can confirm that otherwise, mastodon doesn't deliberately shove stuff in my face unless i want it there.

unlike every other social media platform.

it also allows you to manually approve followers too.

@breathOfLife i disable it because i don't want it and i think it's a pointless antifeature, but i'll always remember how in the chaos following elon buying twitter something broke for a hot minute and it stopped telling you what to be angry about and started just being about hobbies and stuff people were actually doing
@aeva it creates a totally different perception doesn’t it. If I see something someone is angry about I think ‘oh that person is angry about something’ rather than ‘this is a thing everyone is angry about and I should feel something about it too’.
@JamesBaker nobody is going to remember the thing tomorrow
@aeva it's fun to show up clueless to the party and ask what everyone is mad about. People get shouty, and then you can say "you ok?" and otherwise carry on a normal conversation. Breaks the whole mood.
