I like the fact that the signs in Cornwall say Beware The Gulls. As opposed to Beware Of The Gulls. Beware The Gulls sounds more ominous, more chilling, more 'these creatures are demonic, you are in grave peril'.

@eniatitova Oh wow, they really do echo one another. Assuming the San Francisco sign is older, maybe someone at the council in Cornwall knew it and was inspired by it. That Scenic Drive sign is cool - I love the graphics of it. Thanks for sharing it.

@eniatitova 1950s - a great decade for graphics and posters. I assume the Cornwall seagull warning sign is much more recent, as I think seagullduggery is a more recent phenomenon.

Noli timere@CiaraNi The word “the” in that context is interesting. Given that “Beware” and “gulls” appear on successive lines, I simply would have written “Beware gulls” (or “Beware: gulls”). Why did the sign writer include “the”, I wonder… because “Beware the gulls” and “Beware gulls” have subtly different meanings.

@donray @nolitimere Perfect. If I replace Jabberwock and Jubjub with Seagull, it makes perfect sense. Next time I see a seagull, I will hiss 'you bandersnatcher' at it.
I suspect it might have something to do with the word "beware." Its usage might be different in different dialects. I would always use it as a phrasal verb "Beware of the dog." It seems incomplete to say "Beware the dog."
@donray @nolitimere They could have gone with Beware Of The Gulls, like Beware Of The Dog, but that would have seemed a bit too pedestrian or domestic or everyday, I think. Dropping the 'of' is what elevated it for me to a more dramatic warning, a warning that Something Terrible may befall you. Beware The Ides of March. Beware The Dragon. Beware The Gulls.
@nolitimere Beware Of The Gulls and Beware The Gulls and Beware Gulls and Beware:Gulls all have different meanings and nuances. I think Beware The Gulls is perfect. Beware: Gulls is a bit Straightfaced Council Notice. Beware Gulls is a bit general. It doesn't have the immediacy of Don't Look Now But They Are Right Behind You. I quite like the slightly ominous cartoon-villainishness of Beware The Gulls. I think it works with the tongue-in-beak style of the sign.

James Gilbert@CiaraNi I think this is an almost mature lesser black backed gull / Baltic gull. The black on its bill will turn red, and its eye will become yellow when mature.
@CiaraNi It is. I wanted to identify it because it looks different to anything I've seen in the UK. Its dark eye makes it look a little more kind.
