So many of my photos have a single seagull in them that I'm starting to wonder if it's the same seagull, stalking me around the world.
Seriously
A faithful companion, my seagull. Following me around even at sunrise.
I was joking about the same seagull following me everywhere, but now that I skim some random photos, maybe I'm not
I wonder if other animals enjoy a nice view, the way humans do
I think I'll start carrying this sign around with me
I like the fact that the signs in Cornwall say Beware The Gulls. As opposed to Beware Of The Gulls. Beware The Gulls sounds more ominous, more chilling, more 'these creatures are demonic, you are in grave peril'.
@CiaraNi This will likely explain quite a lot, then: https://birdsarentreal.com/pages/faq
FAQ

They used to be. Until the U.S. Government replaced them with drone replicas designed to spy on the American public. Founded in 1976.

Birds Aren't Real
@winissen 'all of these real birds were replaced with surveillance drones designed to look just like Birds.' Gasp. That really does explain a lot. Possibly everything.
@CiaraNi I swear they're up to something...
@rvedotrc Haha, so well done
@CiaraNi Sounds like a good bandname as well.
@NousZLD Ha yes, it would be!
@CiaraNi
Here be Gulls
@notsoloud That'd keep me away. Scarier than dragons. So much more screeching, and less interesting.
@CiaraNi I like how your sign is a mirror image of ours, including the color.
@eniatitova Oh wow, they really do echo one another. Assuming the San Francisco sign is older, maybe someone at the council in Cornwall knew it and was inspired by it. That Scenic Drive sign is cool - I love the graphics of it. Thanks for sharing it.
49 Mile Scenic Drive | KQED

In 1954, an artist named Rex May painted a seagull on a street sign, creating the iconic "49 Mile Scenic Drive" city markers. Its legacy becomes endangered, however, when a mysterious forgery threatens to take its place.

@eniatitova 1950s - a great decade for graphics and posters. I assume the Cornwall seagull warning sign is much more recent, as I think seagullduggery is a more recent phenomenon.
@CiaraNi Well.. they*are* demonic. 😈
@CiaraNi May also refer to this lot, touring very soon... https://www.the-gulls.com/

THE GULLS
@CiaraNi The word “the” in that context is interesting. Given that “Beware” and “gulls” appear on successive lines, I simply would have written “Beware gulls” (or “Beware: gulls”). Why did the sign writer include “the”, I wonder… because “Beware the gulls” and “Beware gulls” have subtly different meanings.

@CiaraNi @nolitimere

Brings to mind:

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

(from Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll)

@donray @nolitimere Perfect. If I replace Jabberwock and Jubjub with Seagull, it makes perfect sense. Next time I see a seagull, I will hiss 'you bandersnatcher' at it.

@CiaraNi @nolitimere

I suspect it might have something to do with the word "beware." Its usage might be different in different dialects. I would always use it as a phrasal verb "Beware of the dog." It seems incomplete to say "Beware the dog."

@donray @nolitimere They could have gone with Beware Of The Gulls, like Beware Of The Dog, but that would have seemed a bit too pedestrian or domestic or everyday, I think. Dropping the 'of' is what elevated it for me to a more dramatic warning, a warning that Something Terrible may befall you. Beware The Ides of March. Beware The Dragon. Beware The Gulls.
@nolitimere Beware Of The Gulls and Beware The Gulls and Beware Gulls and Beware:Gulls all have different meanings and nuances. I think Beware The Gulls is perfect. Beware: Gulls is a bit Straightfaced Council Notice. Beware Gulls is a bit general. It doesn't have the immediacy of Don't Look Now But They Are Right Behind You. I quite like the slightly ominous cartoon-villainishness of Beware The Gulls. I think it works with the tongue-in-beak style of the sign.
@CiaraNi these birds are the enemy #1 hehehe
@nys793 And a fierce enemy, too. Not to be messed with when they come right at you at full screech.
@CiaraNi hehehe i am an urban guy, unless is a cat or dog, with exceptions, i don't go near
@CiaraNi
Definitively a government drone. Have you said anything controversial before you started seeing it?
@CiaraNi Hello #Oslo seagull 👋
@matt It was waiting for the opera to start. It enjoys the high seas.
@CiaraNi I think this is an almost mature lesser black backed gull / Baltic gull. The black on its bill will turn red, and its eye will become yellow when mature.
@jgrg Don't tell it I said this, but it's a handsome bird
@CiaraNi It is. I wanted to identify it because it looks different to anything I've seen in the UK. Its dark eye makes it look a little more kind.
@jgrg I hadn't thought of the difference between them in different territories. Interesting. "Its dark eye makes it look a little more kind." That's a lovely observation. Agreed - the yellow eyes make gulls seem more 'malevolent'. When they're attacking you, especially.
@jgrg @CiaraNi we do have lesser black backed gulls (and great black backed - they’re really big) in the UK but they seem not as adjusted to dealing with humans as Herring Gulls.
@aimaz @jgrg I am so accustomed to seagulls being screeching attacking sky-demons that I read 'dealing with humans' in the sense of them 'dealing' with us the way Mafia operatives would.
@CiaraNi Bears have been observed to do that.
Maybe that's one way gulls unwind, in between sessions of screeching and chip-diving.
@KatS Not a bad auld life, really. A nice screech, some chips, relax and enjoy the view.
@centiquetzal This is so lovely. The headline and the photo and the news that at least some other animals also like a nice view - just lovely. Thanks for sharing this.
@CiaraNi Nice 🙂 You are getting the Western winds with full-power !
@hanktank61 We are indeed. The gusts are rather terrifying right now
@CiaraNi att seagull central right now:
"SHE'S ON TO US! SCRAMBLE! DESTROY ALL EQUIPMENT!!"
@Mabande Ha, so I was right - I KNEW those bloody seagulls were organised
@CiaraNi I've heard something similar about ducks, but not seagulls. A combination of Anatidaephobia
https://www.fearof.net/fear-of-ducks-phobia-anatidaephobia/ and the Fregoli delusion? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fregoli_delusion
Fear of Ducks Phobia - Anatidaephobia

There are many kinds of seemingly irrational fears and phobias prevalent in the world. What might be laughing matter to people, is not so to a phobic. Anatidaephobia is one such phobia.
