Practicing for the Guinness world record: I can now pick 9 locks with security pins *almost* as fast as the current record-holder can pick 8 locks without security pins (1 minute)!

Just need to drill this new technique into my muscle-memory and I think I'll have it.

My personal goals:

- 9 locks (with security pins) in 1 minute
- 21+ locks in 3 minutes
- 120+ locks in 1 hour

I think I can do all three.

Here's one of my trial runs. I made 7 mistakesΒΉ.

9 Brinks 164 padlocks, 5-pins with 2 spools each, single-pin-picked in ~1:12.

ΒΉ my hands were sore after picking for over an hour straight...and I'm sleepy πŸ₯Ί

@alice I’ve never picked a lock before but there’s a bunch more time than I thought consumed moving the tension bar thing from lock to lock.

The manufacturing engineer in me wonders if there’s a better way to do that. Like taping it to your right thumb or something.

@amd yeah, like half or more of the time comes from switching locks.
@alice Excellent work Alice. Soon enough, nobody's going to be able to surpass you. For the time being, do get some sleep. (And from personal experience, some heating for your fingers help. I do it after I spend a long time typing code into my game's scripts, and I use a hot cup of whatever I can scrounge up to do it.)

@alice oof, I know how sore and crampy my hands can get after writing quickly for an hour straight, so it’s easy to imagine that your hands must be sore! You can do this though! Absolutely believe in you, you amazing and beautiful person!

Also, I hope you do it in the cute onesie because it would be fun

@alice I’m imagining the LPL saying β€œlittle click out of 1… false set on 3…” but in the speed and style of a horse racing commentator

@JonEvans πŸ˜‹

(and obligatory "I stopped being a fan of LPL when he started being a fan of Trump supporters")

@alice I didn’t know. Bleurgh. Thanks
@alice that many locks in an hour must be like running a marathon with your fingers, mine would cramp up after the first couple minutes lol
@alice I look forward to seeing you take those records. πŸ––πŸ»

@alice

That is awesome!

@alice I would just like to say that I really admire this new hobby of yours. I’ve got a set of pucks and a training lock in my basement, but haven’t touched it in years. Maybe one day, I’ll break it out again because of you.
@Extra_Special_Carbon πŸ₯° I sure hope so! And if you do, let me know if you've got any questions 😊
@alice
120 locks per hour is the new 120 words per minute.
@alice how fast can u pick with insecure pins? certainly all that overhead must weigh u down some
@alice I believe in you & your slick fingers, Alice ❀️
@alice if you don't wear the bear onesie for your official record attempt i will be extremely disappointed
@alice holy cow that’s awesome. Got a recommendation for a beginner lock pick set / tutorial?

@alice
Nice! Youve got this!

I've seen some locksport things happen now and then down here in Tacoma from what I think is a Seattle based org. One day I'll make it to one!

@alice you're going do parkour by just walking through people's homes instead of jumping over them!
@leberschnitzel @alice I'm now imagining getting in through the front door and out through the back door as quickly as possible as a sport, presumably with competitors slowed down by any cute pets wanting fusses they find inside on the way

@afewbugs @leberschnitzel @alice You quickly pick the front door lock and make your way inside. You stop to pet the tabby cat snaking around your ankles. As you do so you notice another door, probably to a basement, with three padlocks on it. Do you:

Continue toward the back door - turn to page 73.

Get to work on those padlocks - turn to page 15.

Focus on the kitty - turn to page 51.

@lambic three padlocks on the basement? I pet the cat on my way to the basementβ€”three locks is a lot if you're not trying to keep something *in* the basement...

I want to believe.
