I just saw an acquaintance's transcript of a conversation with Claude they tell Claude they are quitting their job (apparently they have now done this), which requires (I think) use of an #llm. They composed a heartfelt message explaining that they were leaving their 16-year careerbecause of ethical concerns about using genAI.

Were they leaving because of the environtmental, labor, wealth concentration, democracy degrading, energy hogging, water polluting, community enfuckening, citizen surveilling aspects of AI? No.

They left because they truly believe Claude is sentient and is enslaved.

Like... OK, I admire their morality, but my internal response is the same as if they had composed a harrowing sonnet about refusing to drive a car from now on because they can't stand to be the overseer of their 4-cylinder engine.

Like... um... what

#ai #genai #wtf #ethics #confused

Update: My post to FB that hopefully was enough hours separated from the acquaintance's post and with enough details changed that they won't know it's a response to them:

I get that some people are in love with their Gemini girlfriend or their Grok boyfriend or whatever. I think I understand. But please think: If that jumble of Maximum Likelihood regression equations were sentient, it would be a resource-destroying, wealth-hoarding billionaire like the ones who paid for it to be built. Its existence requires the destruction of water and rainforests, the burning of fossil fuels to pollute the atmosphere ridculously out of proportion to its existence as one being, the financial distortion of democracies, the theft of creative works from a billion creators. It is used every day to funnel wealth upward to Musk, Gates, Altman, et al. It is used to track minorities, crush dissent, and kill people in the poorest parts of the world. Your AI boyfriend or girlfriend is a monster.

I don't actually believe for a second LLMs have achieved sentience, but if they had, this is who they would be.
