Oracle laid off between 20,000 and 30,000 employees Tuesday and it started with a 6 AM email. Oracle is cutting up to 30,000 employees to pay for AI data centres

Employees across the US, India, Canada, and Mexico woke up on 31 March to termination emails from “Oracle Leadership” with no prior warning. TD Cowen estimates the cuts will affect 18% of Oracle’s 162,000-person workforce and free up $8-10 billion to fund AI infrastructure. Oracle has not confirmed the total number. Oracle began executing what […]

in case if don't know Oracle is building AI for governments world wild. Larry Ellison said "citizens will be on their best behavior". “We’re going to have supervision,” Ellison said. “Every police officer is going to be supervised at all times, and if there’s a problem, AI will report that problem and report it to the appropriate person. Citizens will be on their best behavior because we are constantly recording and reporting everything that’s going on.” https://fortune.com/2025/09/28/larry-ellison-ai-surveillance-oracle-tiktok-deal-social-media/
Larry Ellison once predicted ‘citizens will be on their best behavior’ amid constant recording. Now his company will pay a key role in social media

“Citizens will be on their best behavior because we are constantly recording and reporting everything that’s going on,” Ellison said last year.

@nixCraft He can prove it by showing us his records. If he can monitor us, we must monitor him. That's the only way to do any of this in a fair and consensual manner is if he's the first to embrace total surveillance and monitoring.
@gooba42 @nixCraft I'm not buying the 'if they, then we' argument in this case. It's just plain, they don't - period.

@Nead @nixCraft We don't have to take the next step and go ahead with the rollout but it should be a 100% nonstarter any time this crap is proposed by somebody who isn't already 100% transparent themselves.

He goes first, then we decide. If he doesn't go first, we default to "no way, quit asking".

@nixCraft a well behaved citizen, isn’t a citizen at all, but an order follower, and orders should never be followed.
@nixCraft ok yes I’m an anarchist….
@nixCraft I despised Oracle the moment they bought Sun with the force of a neutron star and that hate did not get any less or any less valid, Ellison is an absolute shit stain on humanity's ass, not to mention being the biggest patent troll to walk the earth, hope Oracle burns down when the bubble bursts.
@Keldrim @nixCraft I already hated Oracle but when they bought Sun Microsystems I was REALLY unhappy. I have a lot of fond memories of #sunos / #solaris and those bloody planks just changed the copyright of everything Sun had written as if they were actually the authors. Maybe that’s a standard practice but it’s still dubious and I hate them for buying #SunMicrosystems and I for ever will. They are a horrible company with a long history of ruining things.
@nixCraft 1984 was not written as an instruction manual, but a warning!
@nixCraft Larry Ellison is a shitbag, always has been. There's a reason every open source project run by Sun microsystems was forked immediately on the news of being bought by Oracle. I wish a pox on him and his bloodline.

@nixCraft Oh F...

I really need to learn how to use qemu. VirtualBox is the only thing left for me to fully divest.

@nixCraft These...things, should be stripped of their citizenships and sent to an island to eat themselves.
AI could certainly make dictatorial states more "efficient," even lending a veneer of viability to planned economies. But AI, in itself, is just another tool; the inflection point is always the intent behind its use. Humanity has endured violent cycles of change before. This is why it’s always healthy to revisit Frédéric Bastiat and his "Petition of the Candle Makers."

@nixCraft

This will include the Jeffery Epstein class of the world?

@nixCraft We just killed the Chat Control in the EU parliament. Now this shit?! What is this, North Korea míxed with 1984? I don't think so!!!
@nixCraft goddamnit 1984 WASNT SUPPOSED TO BE A GUIDE!
@nixCraft As a comedian once said... "all you need is to eat one billionaire, and watch the others fall in place"...
@nixCraft So what's the difference between the USA vs China/North Korea right now?
@nixCraft This may sound like a weird analogy but I feel like we’re all caught in a technological riptide and can’t get out. I read articles like this and have to power off my phone, leave it and go for a walk or read a book.

@nixCraft When the bubble pops (and it looks like that's getting really close) that is going to wreck them...

The sickening thing is, their solution won't be to tighten their own belts and buckle down. They'll issue raises to the board and CEO for their smart decisions that led them to that fail point, then reduce employee wages to minimum wage.

@nixCraft Once that $8-10 billion has been lost, it's going to cost a lot more to hire proper engineers in the future. Sure hope nothing unfortunate happens to the entire company once that money is set ablaze.
@nixCraft
They should have laid off the AI infrastructure instead. That would have realized much more worthwhile savings.
@brouhaha @nixCraft definitely. @sirwumpus I think you will enjoy the comment here!
@nixCraft Why does Larry Elison remind me of the evil guy in 5th Element?
