@Techaltar Good video. The #eu has to stop obsessing about free markets and pay more attention to protecting their own citizens.

@timagal @Techaltar

Does the EU have ancaps the way the US does?

@keithnator3000 @Techaltar as far as I know, only the ones that come across the pond to squeeze a PhD from Germany or the ones who come to show off at Venice...
I don't think that the millio- billionaires are as greedy, they usually are more complacent.

@timagal @Techaltar

Are the PhDs funded by the government? It would be ironic.

@keithnator3000 @Techaltar They are indeed, in most cases.

@Techaltar

There are niche project like http://taler.net/ that I highy encourage taking a look at, just to see how payments could be done.

Anonymity for the payer while still being taxable with no blockchain involved, documented client<>server APIs for apps and integrations, open source apps, welcoming network for local small-scale providers, bank accounts (any accounts actually) being just optional, super low fees and protocols focused on being natively standardized on the Internet (look at https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc8905).

GNU Taler - Taxable Anonymous Libre Electronic Resources

A payment system that makes privacy-friendly online transactions fast and easy.

@Techaltar It might be of interest to you that Polish BLIK system was also established originally in 2013 as an initiative of 6 major banks, but it was constructed to run under a supervision of the country finiancial oversight institutions. Now, since 2020 Mastercard bought a share in it, it also became a partner opening its own terminals to accept BLIK contactless payments.
@Techaltar we’ve had Interac in Canada since the 80s. Works well.

@Techaltar nice easter egg! 😊

Are there others I should be looking for? 🤓

@siddharth_s I can't remember having any others 😁

@Techaltar

The transfer of money should be a free and protected right. Not a service.

@thepinkhacker @Techaltar It is free and protected already (at least for the individual) in form of the wire transfers.

@etua_en @Techaltar

First of all, at least in the USA wire transfers are often not free. Also for more services they aren't really an option. The amount of websites that have been forced by payment processors to do things or else they wouldn't be able to collect money from their users.

@Techaltar
I find interesting that ING partners with Bancomat through EPI but their accounts here in Italy will only issue MasterCard debt cards.
@Techaltar One problem I have with all these systems at the moment is interoperability. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to move/visit a new country and not be able to pay at some shops because you don't have the local thing (in this country's case, it would require me to get a bank account in that specific country). I feel like this is the real advantage Visa/Mastercard have, and until there's something as universal as them, they are not going away anytime soon.
@Techaltar Another solution that you haven't mentioned but it's really ultra popular in Italy is Satispay.
I think it looks more like those chinese platforms since it's developed on its own proprietary platform, but has been expanding to integratate services that used to be offered only by banks (investment/saving plans, different kind of playment) as well as ticket restaurant...

@Techaltar Why is there no love for cash in here? I don’t want batteries, or internet service, or a phone to be required—& I want my privacy respected. I don’t care for the tiny inconvenience of needing to carry change or stop by the ATM machine. Having moved to a cash-first country a decade ago, it took about a month to adopt/integrate to not using cards for everything & now it is 100% preferred. Folks will complain about ATM fees (my bank luckily pays them), but *this* is the part of the chain I wish these systems would be fixing.

Worse is these payment systems often tend to only work on proprietary Google or Apple mobile duopoly phones—which just shifts the blame to 2 different US corporations… 2 that know more about most of their users than even the credit card companies. & even then, this is why it’s been infeasible to most to flash custom ROMs, root their phones, & continue to be the owner of their purchased device as the banks have turned your phone into their terminal. I want this all offloaded so I can maintain the freedom in the computer in my pocket… the banks & megacorpos can kick rocks.

@Techaltar Why its so hard to have Euro card?
