About 10 days ago Bluesky proudly announced it got 100m investment, largely from cryptobros:

Today they are proudly announcing an "AI product" that relies on scraping your posts.

#Bluesky #AI

@rysiek Equally unsurprising and disappointing.

In the end, it doesn't matter. Bluesky was going to go through the enshittification cycle. They just used today's most obvious and braindead hype to begin enshittifying.

Fuck'em with a cactus.

@rysiek even Lucy is jealous of their balls.

@rysiek
This IMO has nothing to do with AI. This is a takeover. US #nazi wants to control all media. Bought the next outlet cheap. Likely to implement Thiel's idea of enemies talking not to each other but to the garbage generator.

“With incoming media acquisitions we finally will be in charge of what Americans see, hear, and read - to fend off both socialistic and dei threats to our Republic." (IIRC from some HF Vought monologs 2018?).

@ohir @rysiek AI is the tool they're using to do it. It's not a goal on its own, but it's already helped the fascists a lot by making web search useless, and by making it so we can never be sure the person we're talking to online is a real person. And, like "targeted ads", it also supplies ample pretense for mass surveillance. I wouldn't go so far as to say this has nothing to do with AI, but you're absolutely right with regards to what it's really about.
@rysiek Mastodon is a true beacon of light in a dark world
@rysiek which is why I deleted my account after the first report!
@rysiek they made it (the money)!

@rysiek Anyone can extract data from Fediverse toots using an AI tool

> I don't say it's a good news, just that is a fact

@sardon @rysiek

Yeah, although Bluesky makes it way easier on you, because the entire firehose of posts is just readily sitting there for you to use.

And if you want to be the social media platform of sophisticated recommendation mechanisms and custom feeds, LLMs are probably a strong tool for that. I just don't think it's worth going to bed with big tech for and to me it just seems like another way of diluting the human element of social media in favour of "content".

@sardon the important difference is the attitude. I have seen many attempts by some techbros to scrape fedi, and every single time it was met with utter hostility by the community. And a lot of times it did work.

Not to mention that while public posts are of course possible to scrape, a lot of people post followers-only for example. And on fedi that makes these impossible to scrape without actually being a follower.

On Bluesky however even "private" accounts are, effectively, public…

@rysiek First they’ll grow, and then someone like Elon will buy them out. Then it’ll be the same old Twitter story all over again. As long as they aren’t DApps, they’ll never be free...
@rysiek pure coincidence, I assume

@rysiek on the one hand, finding shit on the fediverse without an index is basically impossible

on the other hand, AI bros are really eager to datamine all your shit

@rysiek
I'm shocked! Shocked I say!
Who could have (not) seen this coming?
