It occurred to me this morning that it has now been over a decade in which we have all been forced to hear something about Donald Trump every fucking day - often many times a day.

There are people in journalism who have no experience of a world in which we actually covered many different topics in a day.

I feel like I've been mentally force fed McDonalds for ten years non-stop.

I would like it to be over before I die, please.

@Remittancegirl

Yeah the only people worse than that motherfucker are the myriad of motherfuckers who've enabled him and a lot of them are in media.

@Remittancegirl the thought that scares me a bit is that this might very well not be the last time that social media catapulted someone this unqualified to such a consequential position
@Remittancegirl hear hear. Frankly I'm sick to vomiting of him.
@Remittancegirl i’d have thought that it should be technically possible to filter out articles about the man so you don’t see them. I’ve been very tempted to try. Whether it would be a good idea to though…
@Remittancegirl you are so right! And still, I am tempted to read all that crap. Like feeling with your tongue the bad tooth checking if it still hurts...

@Remittancegirl
I've been sick to death of right wing politics, policy, and politicians for my entire adult life. Beginning with Reagan, his 'kitchen cabinet', the heritage foundation, gingrich, and many others of their ilk since

trump wasn't the start of this crap, and his passing won't mark the end of it

I see the problem with news coverage (narrowing scope, whatever) as having more to do with failure of the business model supporting it. Of course, right wing policy wins contributed to that

@davidbraze @Remittancegirl

💯

But just what is the failure of the media business model?

Could it be the for-profit model, typically by major corporate owners with numerous conflicting interest before the government?

Taken together, that's a powerful incentive to avoid holding power to account while also skewing content to appease your advertisers.
#MediaMustDoBetter

@davidbraze @Remittancegirl Don't forget the owners of those media outlets have been eating their own editorial slop for *decades*. They double-down on the right-wing bullshit because they're indoctrinating themselves, via their own newsrooms. Which IN TURN contributes to the failure of news as a business model. It's a series of viciously self-reinforcing failure modes.

@davidbraze @cstross @Remittancegirl

This. Remember when Drudge started becoming the instigator of news? It’s only escalated from there.

@Remittancegirl I am quite certain Trump will die before you do, the statistics are on your side.

@Remittancegirl

This hits especially hard for me. I got told I was being laid off in a bloodbath of an acquisition on a Monday back in 2016. Tuesday was the election. That also ended my time in Boston.

It was a very sharp discontinuity that destroyed the entire life I'd built up to that point. I landed on my feet, but it's different. Possibilities and aspirations faded out, and I know at this point they're never coming back.

I feel like I've been living in a campsite amidst ruins ever since.

@Remittancegirl absolutely agree - I am sick of hearing about him

@Remittancegirl @jzb I remember thinking what a relief it was, after Biden was elected, to not have to be constantly hearing about US politics for a while. (As a non-American.) It dialed back down to only a 'normal' amount of news for a while.

(and then, of course, when the multi-year presidential election process started up again, it returned to the previous ridiculous levels.)

@benjamineskola after about a month…
@Cass_m yeah I honestly don’t understand how the yanks get anything done when 50% of every presidential term is spent in campaign mode, but that’s another matter.
@Remittancegirl Hear hear! 💯 I am so sick of seeing photos of Trump or his name in the daily news. Why are these photos not censored like photos of other criminals in newspapers ?

@Remittancegirl

I agree, the BBC are guilty of this, when Trump was elected and took office we had 100 days, covering the first 100 days of his presidency and yet despite being the BRITISH broadcasting corp, we didn't get 100 days of Starmers premiership.

@Remittancegirl we really need it to stop

It's physically healthy to avoid any drug.
It's mentally a curse being consciously all the time though.😒

Yeah. It's really shit if one doesn't like the taste of alcohol or smoking (and cookies only make tired) 😒
It's like (see pic) all the time.

@Remittancegirl I check the Yahoo finance page every weekday to see what's going on with the markets. I dread it because I know there's a 98% chance I'll see that clown's face attached to multiple news stories.

@Remittancegirl sadly I think most media companies facilitated his rise (and never questioned anything he did, criminal activities included)... because in this brave new world "engagement" is king and "normal" (read: measured, traditional) politicians don't generate as many clicks or outrage or attention as that abomination. In my little corner all I can do is teach (and encourage in) my child critical thinking. le sigh.

@_elena @Remittancegirl All the wrong things being normalised fodder for herds of humans. It continues to drive me to despair to see all around me people clinging tightly to their phones with thick headphones on their ears and scant consequential regard for environment or others.

Most people turn corners without slowing down even when not on their phones as modern life is oblivious to strangers - no preempting, no sense of a shared of the public space. No care.

@NicelyManifest @_elena @Remittancegirl

It's the controversy that the social media discovered keeps us engaged. Engaged eyeballs makes them $$$.

#Trump in particular with his old man, bigoted, dementia ways generated easy money like no other.

I'm sick of hearing about him and will often force myself to not even click something that mentions him. Some days that's harder to do than others. He's in so much of the news like a malignant skin rash.

@MyWoolyMastadon @_elena @Remittancegirl To me it is the combination of endless fraud by Trump - mega-insidertrading - and the enabling of that by a political system that almost entirely fails to hold him to account on any matter.

The whole system stinks.

@Remittancegirl It is simply the failure to protect the people from the consequences of deregulated markets. As such the media favours the mob, as the media represents those who are the wealthiest. Not only can they pay them the most, they are the most heavily invested in those corporations that own and control the most capital. As such it has pushed the policies and tax benefits of Empire’s fascist cults. Fascists are a syndicate of oligarchs and plutocrats and together with their cults, they have created a violent warmongering mob!
@Remittancegirl What will they talk about when he's gone? They will still be talking about him for 10 more years! Your only recourse is to change the channel, and tell the network why you're doing it. Tell everyone else, too. When it starts to cost them money, they will change.
@Remittancegirl god I remember when Biden got into office and it seemed like things calmed down so much, almost instantly. Even here in the UK the change was palpable.

@Remittancegirl I spent ten years warning people to not enable or elect him. Yet the most common American reply I am getting is: "he is one of us". That seems to be the creepy sentiment shared throughout society.

I worry, people enable him because they want to be like him... 😑

@danielsreichenbach I think that is very much the case for some of them. For some, he is everything they want to be. What a dark aspiration, right?

@Remittancegirl yeah, it's frightening and absolutely nonsensical for me how one can even consider this. This is so not how American PR presents the country 😑

I hope people will wake up. All over the world.

@danielsreichenbach @Remittancegirl

Halfway into Trump's first term, I realized ‘he’s one of us’ was really shorthand for rejecting brown and Black people.

@ChrisWellens @Remittancegirl at this point it looks like this attitude is the soul of the USA. 😤

@danielsreichenbach @Remittancegirl

I live in a very red area and have noticed that many people here, including some of my family members, are tribal to the point that one loud intimidating voice keeps the others toeing the MAGA line. It also tends to degrade their mental and moral growth. Churches are also extremely culpable here, as is Faux news.

@Savvyhomestead @Remittancegirl this is extremely odd to me. How a church can ever justify following a fascist without denouncing god...
@Remittancegirl I agree 100%. The irony of me being so frustrated by this is that I have just read and responded to comment about him, thereby promoting exactly what frustrates me and brought him to power.
@Remittancegirl I am frustrated by it daily. There are people alive, reaching adulthood, who have never known mental peace because of him. This is the answer: https://wandering.shop/@cstross/116312131511600504
