Thee Mighty Peculia π@alice When I was a kid, it was pretty common for older women to have blue or purple or pale pink hair. Iβm not talking about outsiders or feminists, but the kind of women who went to the beauty parlor every week and wore white gloves to church. I knew even then that Iβd do that with my own hair someday. For them to call it weird is just another of their lies. Never let anyone tell you what you should look like.

Andrew Zonenberg@lydialurch @alice my understanding is that in that time frame people who naturally had yellowed gray hair would try to hide the yellow and create a more neutral silver color by adding a slight blue tint, but would often go overboard by mistake and end up more blue than gray

@alice @azonenberg @emily_rugburn @madargon Those colors are used that way for sure, but most folks donβt realize that there were unnatural pastel rinses made by Roux, a very old hair coloring brand, in shades of blue, purple, pink, and green. Because there have always been women who donβt want to look like everyone else. The product still exists but I think they stopped making the Party Colors around the late β70s.

i grew up going to catholic church and the like afterschool religious education programs, and both my parents had some experience with catholic schools proper, so there was a well established archetype of a "strict, scary nun" in my cultural context β one such nun was sort of infamous in my afterschool program, and she had pretty serious orange dyed hair. my mom used to tell me that if she was being scary i could imagine her taking the time to dye her hair because she cared about her appearance and expressing herself, and it would make her seem less like a larger than life intimidating religious figure and more like a fellow human
