They are like tiny superheroes and only use their power for good, they only fly if it's to save a life, or do a good deed. (OK I made that up, but I'll try to find out the real reason later.)

a HOT Rubie I saw very few actually fly. The first time I saw one I did not recognise it until it landed and folded it´s wings in. It is kind of freaky the first time.

Now I need to answer why they had a congregation in my mailbox some time ago. I went to check the mail and found like 100 of these guys hanging out.
It was moist and the perfect flat and secret place.
They love the same conditions as firbrats and silverfish in some ways.

I see earwigs *constantly* in the garden, and frequently displace them when cleaning things up, and nothing I've done has ever provoked one to fly. Nor have I ever seen one anywhere but on (or very near) the ground. I've seen spiders fly (balloon) and they don't even have wings! I wonder what circumstances would cause an earwig to actually use theirs, if it's only at night or something?
