I’m finally quitting adobe, they raised my subscription so much it’s absurd.

I want to migrate 2-3 Lr catalogs to dark table or similar. For anyone who’s done it, do I need to have Lr to export things in certain formats, or is it ok to go ahead & cancel subscription asap, then wait & worry about getting #darktable set up in a month or two when I have more energy?

Normally I wouldn’t gamble but I’ve could stand to save the money & I’m too stressed about upcoming talk to deal w a migration rn

$10 was already a lot for 2 software but within market comparison, a jump to $25 for 2 software is absurd

Did fast math and I’ve spent *at least* $1000 BORROWING adobe’s software, vs like idr but maybe $70 on aperture while it still existed (RIP) .

This isn’t even precise math, this is vague back of hand maths — as in I’m pretty sure the number is much higher if I looked up the actual dates for when I had full creative suite vs just photography plan.

I need to go throw myself in a well. I really should not have done math.

To be fair I was a working creative professional most of those years and sometimes earning money from what I did with said softwares, but tbqh if any software got me paid it was keybote/powerpoint

ANYWAY while I go try to nap my migraine off , anyone want to share their pros and cons of the diff photoshop alternatives?

I’m suddenly VERY open to a one time purchase after doing that math , though ofc very down with FOSS.

I really wish GNUimp’s makers weren’t always quadrupling down on the name.

@moss i have so many opinions on this subject, but basically I think affinity suite is the best adobe alternative at this point. if you have to use adobe for work I recommend pirating it if you can. it’s a little tricky but it can be done
also, lol, i absolutely hate using gimp and don’t think it’s professionally viable but i do use it sometimes for very basic tasks
@moss I am not particularly helpful in this space, because I've just hung on to unlocked copies of Photoshop 7 and CS2. They still do everything I need for pretty basic editing stuff.
@moss you might take a look at Affinity. It has a suite like Adobe but was bought by Canva. Canva has released all of the tools for free (freemium, I guess because you have to pay for the AI tier). I bought mine before the acquisition but I find the photo tool more like Photoshop than GIMP. Not sure about the Lightroom comparison. I know that downloading and testing can be a lot but you might find it's a good price point and balance of functionality. https://www.affinity.studio/

@moss That's brutal.

I would greatly like to meet the person who came up with the concept of software subscription fees like they charge because I would never stop punching them.

It has infected so much.😡

@moss I'd play it safe and export everything in a neutral format. I haven't used Lr but perhaps my experience with photoshop might help? when I was quitting it for Krita, though krita could open psd files, I exported tiff as well. My fear was that while krita could handle psd I might not like it and have to switch to something that couldn't so tiff was the option.

@dilmandila @moss PSD... the only letter missing in that extension is T.

That's why this exists:

@moss Always nice to see someone give Adobe two to the head and move somewhere else.

Good luck!

@moss I have never used LightRoom so I have no experience migrating from it, but I'd suggest export everything you want to keep before cancelling subscription. I wouldn't put it past them to immediately cut you off the day you cancel.
@moss I don't know about Lr but if they give you static about paying out a "contract" kick up a stink, complain and escalate and they will relent. I got them to...
@moss if you contact adobe to ask about this they might give you a free month which would buy you some more time
@moss if you try to cancel your adobe subscription theyll give you the option to have a reduced monthly payment for some amount of time, or at least they used to
Good luck!
Adobe / Autodesk / Canva / Maxon alternatives

Adobe, Affinity (Canva), Autodesk, Maxon and the like are all very commercial corporations, with pricy subscriptions and increasingly prominent (de)generative AI functionality.
