The desire on returning to the UK to buy a house in the English or Welsh countryside, install solar panels, collect rainwater, and grow vegetables, is very high. The world has gone to chaos, let's make it small again.
@dee get out of my head :p
@dee Not sure about the UK as a place.
But yes, the thought of a small mostly self sustaining community (not wanting to be an eremite) is tempting.
@doppelgrau I really wish the "move country" narrative would end, it's really hard to do that for the vast majority of people if not actually impossible. Brexit happened, I've no family ties to other countries, am trans, work limits where I could go, I'm older and pensions and health won't transfer to other places at equivalence... Safety within the country we have rights to is the only realistic path. This narrative didn't hurt me greatly as I lead I fairly privileged standard of living in the UK, but for most who read it, it's crushing.
@dee Sorry, didn't meant it that way.
@doppelgrau that's ok ❤️ I just think it's important to kill that narrative. It hurts so many, and with global war looming it will only hurry move as further restrictions emerge.
@dee You are right.
I was just thinking "where I would want to have that small community" (and not seriously considering the implications and practicality of migrating)
@dee And yes, building smaller (local) communities is something that we probably all should try to do, independent if in a small cottage or as a network in the neighborhood of a city.
@dee

I hear "solar-powered ground-source heat pump" is the new "pastoral."
@woody self sustaining energy encapsulates that already... Self sustaining water use though, that's the real challenge especially with long hot summers
@dee @woody But you did say Welsh so lack of rainwater is absolutely not going to be a problem. It's even a bit damp here in the Cotswolds. Never forget poor old Doctor Foster who disappeared under tragic circumstances locally.
@nf3xn @woody but what about the summer months where it only rains every few days?!
