apple is not your friend
apple does not have your back

@Viss @josephcox no corporation is, but Apple USED TO be slightly less of an eager snitch.
@Viss @josephcox and as we know... snitches get stitches
@Viss To be fair, no company has your back when it comes to a law enforcement request. The only way they can is to not have the data to start with.
@thomasareed not true. warrant canaries exist, others will tell you if your data has been requested (unless its an nsa gag order type) - there are a bunch of ways to comply with law enforcement and also introduce notifications and resistance
@thomasareed @Viss I came here to say this, but its not just when a law enforcement request comes in, a company will never have your back when it comes to their profit either.
If they could, a corporation would sell your kidneys in a heartbeat if it meant their profits go up.
@zrowolf @thomasareed facebook famously asked peopel for their phone numbers, claiming it was for 2fa, then used it for marketing. then apple did the same thing, then lied about it.
@zrowolf @thomasareed this thing just keeps getting longer and longer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Apple_Inc.

@Viss @soatok @josephcox It's important to remember here any US based company is going to be subject to US laws. Which unfortunately means any US company that has your information is obligated to give it.
Privacy is pretty much nonexistent in the US, treat any interaction with US companies appropriately.

@xoagray @soatok @josephcox

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_canary

validating the warrant, if one even exists
if not, demanding one

notifying the user, unless theres a gag order

fighting the gag order

storing the data in a way that makes it impossible to retrieve

im so tired of people defending apple

when will you learn?

@Viss @soatok @josephcox I'm not defending Apple at all, I'm saying ALL US companies are subject to these laws, you can't put your faith in ANY of them. Regardless of which one you personally think is better. All of them will do this, and all of them have done so in the past.
@xoagray @soatok @josephcox when i worked at twitter, i got to field several requests from the fbi

@Viss @soatok @josephcox From what I've seen, Twitter just sold the data so anyone could buy it. Including law enforcement and the government. And I could just never trust a company run by Elon Musk.
