Interesting that #NewZealand is engaged in a big campaign to recruit #k12 #teachers from the US right now.

And it really seems like the right time to be doing this.

@kreynen That is it. They are advertising in k-12 teacher groups on social media.
@bud_t Glad to see you doing your part to extend the reach of that their commercial social spend to federated social :). Fun fact: that site is running version 10 of #Drupal w/o CSS aggregation. This makes it very easy to see which modules are enabled. I can point to at least 3 features on that site I personally contributed code to. #drupal4Gov #drupal4good
@bud_t @kreynen K-12 (and preschool) pay is abysmal in the US.... how is it in NZ?
@ai6yr @kreynen not sure about the NZ pay. TBH I have not looked into it. But I am fairly confident that the working conditions and politics of teaching are better than here.
@ai6yr @bud_t @kreynen SF housing prices, Midwest salaries. Beautiful place and wonderful people but the cost of living pressures are very high and many NZ folks are leaving
@ai6yr @bud_t @kreynen food is wayyyyy more expensive than California. Like raw ingredients. Like garlic. It’s intense. I don’t understand how anyone lives there without a lot of support or family money.

@ai6yr @bud_t @kreynen

Salaries range from 51-90 K depending on experience.

"Challenges

• Teacher shortage
• Housing costs
• Rural isolation"

@bud_t Bud, this is brilliant about the teachers. Right now, any country that wants to boost their talent pool in any sector just needs to make their VISA process easy, maybe entice with a $5,000 moving allowance, and they'll get flooded with talent from the U.S. Because everyone you see not wearing a red hat has thought about leaving, many have.

Everyone's situation is different. And I know some countries like Portugal are being flooded with U.S. "expats." Locals are not amused.

@bud_t
Trust me you don't want any U.S. Maths teachers there. They aren't required to have any Maths qualifications (I've seen a Youtube by one who is a Computer Science major and he's giving the wrong answer to an order of operations question), and they've been sliding in the world rankings for more than 10 years
