Am I turning into a cranky old man or is this some creepy ass shit?

" #MelaniaTrump walks side by side with humanoid #robot at #WhiteHouse summit

...pitched a vision of the future in which robots serve as educators who teach students about philosophy and art

...focused on #AI and #education, the first lady spoke to 45 female world leaders about the potential benefits of the #technology in the lives of young people, including through AI humanoid educators"

🤮🤮🤮

@benroyce Melania Trump, an unfeeling automaton and First Lady of the United States walk into a phone booth ...
@benroyce Yeah. Get a machine without a soul to talk up philosophy and art with students. 🙄

@benroyce

It’s pure advertising. She’s just helping major donors sell more stuff. Money, money, money (and I’m sure she collected some for all her hard work).

@benroyce

Melania's the one on the left, yes?

Oh, hang on, just got to the bit where it talks — the robot speaks much better English.

@mmalc @benroyce No, the robot is the one on the right.
Push a button and you can program it to say stoopid sh*t like, “I really don’t care do you?”

The figure on the left had a stroke several months ago, but with lots of patient rehab it learned to walk again. Doing pretty well I’d say.

@grammasaurus @mmalc

i remember that

@benroyce @mmalc Back in the good old days when we thought we were close to hitting rock bottom.

We were so naïve

@benroyce
I’ve never her seen her First Ladyship do anything that wasn’t creepy.
@benroyce
Well, she is a Stepford Wife.
@benroyce -your crank wasn't bought,subscirbed to,or indoctrinated. Was if? Crank on! All of what we are got us this far.. Those who think random amputions of what got us here so much folly.
@benroyce world models powering these, models of causality, are advancing rapidly enough to make them ubiquitous in a decade / security, medical, military, retail, etc / nvidia cosmos is in its infancy / lagging behind human capability and battery life is temporary / soon they will be ready to serve capital like a mf replacing labor and the like

@benroyce

no, you’re correct, that’s objectively creepy

and as a teacher preparing the first “art history friday” for my world history class, i just have to say — it’s one thing to identify “material” for students to “learn;” it’s another thing altogether to know how to teach it so that it lives in their minds and hearts a little

@benroyce @babyalligator

A white, robotic, emotionless figure walks towards the camera. An electronic droid is walking beside her.
#AltText 😀

@babyalligator @benroyce

Why do we need to teach anyone anything when we have robots already?

@benroyce

Yes, Melania is definitely creepy assed shit

@benroyce

Maybe she's just auditioning her next husband.

Seems like it has all the needed qualifications... easy to turn off, transplanted brain that doesn't do much beyond talk, can navigate down one corridor before walking in the opposite direction.

Sounds perfect!

@benroyce makes me want to drop kick that droid and yell: "THIS IS THE DROID WE'RE LOOKING FOR! "

Then I'll break a chair across the robot's head that doesn't have hair.

@benroyce NGL, I was holding my breath waiting for the robot to trip, start flailing, and take down Melania by hacking her at the knees. 😂

@benroyce Sorry, have they never been in an American classroom?

Talked to any real, live teachers?

Wouldn't be five minutes before the students figure out how to sabotage it.

Although I bet any robot art "teachers" would end up with some fantastic paint jobs.

@solitha

they're going to spend more on repairs and security with robot teachers, rather than just fucking hiring human teachers

@benroyce guess South Park will show us what she does with that thing behind closed doors...
@benroyce
As a retired educator, it is an insane idea. But then Melania is robotic, too, and probably prefers their company. It has the smell of Peter Thiel all over it imo.
The #Robot is on the right. No, wait, left. No. Both left and right.

@benroyce

You’ll note that she stays pretty far away from the robot. This is a safety measure, because if the robot starts to fall, it may start flailing its arms around to regain its balance.

Robotics pioneer Rod Brooks has a number of things to say about humanoid robots:

@lain_7 @benroyce She still got closer to it than she does to her husband!

@benroyce
You are correct.

It is indeed creepy

But also a patently stupid idea being peddled by a halfwit who understands nothing about either education nor AI, and whose subterranean moral code reaches no higher than payola to herself
