UN votes to recognise enslavement of Africans as 'gravest crime against humanity'

The landmark resolution calls for an apology and contributions to a reparations fund, without specifying an amount.

Of course, 🇮🇱 🇺🇸 🇦🇷 voted no against this resolution, but a big group of 52 countries also abstained, mostly from 🇪🇺 (and yes, that includes 🇳🇱 as well). So much for showing remorse and turning a blind eye against their own history. 🤦🏽‍♂️ 🤦🏽
@ryanjess77
What did you expect from countries (governments) supporting a genocide?

@freediverx @ryanjess77

Neither Spain nor Ireland support the genocide in Gaza...

@grb090423 @freediverx @ryanjess77 Exceptions don’t break the rule and all that.

And Spain were slave traders.

@aral @freediverx @ryanjess77

No, you're right, they don't, and yes Spain absolutely was (like most European countries). I was just pointing out the stance of both countries in the Gaza genocide matter. Good has to be acknowledged sometimes for it to be able to contiue and hopefully spread.

@freediverx @ryanjess77
Now that awards are being given out, the current contestants are jealous.
@ryanjess77
🇫🇷 too , absolute shame
@clickhere @ryanjess77 You should perhaps look into the history of your country and see how the English and the Americans treated them.

@kDelta I see you're attempting to dicksplain my own history to me. Don't bother.

@ryanjess77

@kDelta you should not perhaps but definitely suck Charlie Kirk's vagina.

@clickhere @ryanjess77

Canada too. I'm mortified.

@Jorsh @ryanjess77 It's so shameful. Our governments are a disgrace.

@clickhere @ryanjess77 Yep.

Colonised themselves but still white more than anything else.

@aral Can you re-phrase that? I'm struggling to interpret it.

@ryanjess77

@clickhere @ryanjess77 I mean, the Irish were colonised but they’re still very much white.

@aral Aha, thank you.

Yes, very much so - real 19thC Irish-in-the -US vibes: determined to be the most white, most racist, kicking right on down, so that the WASPs would stop hating on them.

@ryanjess77

@clickhere @ryanjess77 Ireland should pay reparations just like the rest of the European countries involved. Many of the grand universities and Georgian streets in both UK and Ireland were paid for by the profits generated by slave labour in the US and the Caribbean up to the 19th Century. Massive castles were built/purchased in Ireland from the proceeds of this horrible crime. An example is Castledaly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daly_Castle
Daly Castle - Wikipedia

@Muiris @ryanjess77 Very much so - and the historical record shows plenty of slave-owners had addresses in Ireland.

@ryanjess77
What I dislike about this resolution is that it solidifies slave trade to the Transatlantic one. At the time, there was still trade of European slaves: mostly Slavs in Crimea, and whatever pirates would capture (regardless of race and religion) in the Mediterranean.

That was the norm, and the norm was only changed by people of the West (who some people here so hate) that decided that we are all equal and that people should not be traded.

@tzafrir @ryanjess77 Oh look, an Israeli defending the transatlantic slave trade and congratulating the perpetrators for eventually being forced to stop hurting the victims. How on brand. Aren’t you supposed to be busy committing genocide?
@ryanjess77 how can they show remorse when one of them is actively funding a genocide in Occupied Palestine and the other is committing the genocide?
@ryanjess77 disgraceful too that every member of the EU refused to vote
@ryanjess77 - so, about those concentration camps containing entire families and those ripped from their families; and sending imprisoned to countries they have no connection with. Now. In the US.
@ryanjess77 Yeah but what's anybody going to do about it. Let's hope reparations happen.
@ryanjess77 @outer I hope we were one of them, but I doubt it.😔

@mlanger @ryanjess77 three against - the United States, Israel and Argentina

UK and EU abstained

Isn't that just like us all?

@outer @ryanjess77 I have to wonder if Argentina voted with us to kiss up to the orange clown.
@mlanger @ryanjess77 President Javier Milei, or “El Loco”, made a $20 Billion deal with the U.S. crazy leader in October.
@outer @ryanjess77 Oh, so they have a crazy president, too? Too much of that shit going around.
@mlanger @ryanjess77 You are absolutely right. I think ours wins the booby prize, but I'm biased.
@ryanjess77 It wasn't before?! Fucken hell, the amount of shit I don't yet know.... ugh
@ryanjess77 Also germany, what's going on? Maybe we think our nations crimes against humanity are up there to? 🤔
@ryanjess77 The almost extinct Natives around the world, in areas slaves were imported to would like a word with you, but most of them are only spirits now so you need a fucking shaman.
@ryanjess77
Since we have a chancellor who did not vote against rape in marriage... Germany has just voted consistently!
🤷
@ryanjess77 Absolutely disgusting (but not surprising):
"The proposal was adopted with 123 votes in favour and three against - the United States, Israel and Argentina."
@ryanjess77 Yes, I definitely support that! But how can crimes against #humanity be classified? Can you really draw up a ‘Top Ten’ of #crimes against humanity? With all due respect and sympathy for the victims of the past, it is a disgrace that crimes against humanity, including #slavery, still exist today – right now, at this very moment. WHY? Why can the ‘crown of creation’ fly to Mars, but not learn from its mistakes? That is a fundamental question that I will probably never understand!
