EPA approves sale of a higher-ethanol fuel to try to lower gas prices

The Environmental Protection Agency has announced it would allow gas stations to continue selling slightly cheaper E15 this summer in a move that may be good for drivers and corn growers but will likely contribute to air pollution.

PBS News

@ai6yr awesome and lets just be honest here:

This is a gift for red states that essentially rely on federal funds to function and corn farmers especially.

This is literally corn welfare

@cvvhrn @ai6yr Aren’t we anticipating fertilizer shortages as well?

@greenarchist @ai6yr Not at my house I have my own compost empire.

But yes those very same farmers depend on tons of commercial fertilizer

@cvvhrn @ai6yr That’s a lot of compost :)

@greenarchist @ai6yr I have another of the green ones and the black I store the dried carbon stuff. But one right now is full of firewood scraps when empty I will move it to its new home. Takes us 3 months or so to fill one then we move on to the next, by the end of the year we are back to first.

Screen it and the worms and larger stuff goes back into the bin and start over.

This one if where the screned is kept to cure and then used as fertilizer in the garden

@greenarchist
Specifically because of the provisions in the Big BS Bill that opens the door to higher ethenol production, Yes.
@cvvhrn @ai6yr

@ai6yr Great! So lemme see if I've got this right:

President Netanyahu attacked Iran using the American treasury and military, so the Israeli military could attack Lebanon and Gaza.

Our military killed a bunch of little girls. Israeli military dispossessed 1.5 million people. Iran shut down the Strait and proceeded to destroy billions of dollars of air defense weapons we paid for.

We lifted sanctions on Russia and Iran.

We bought 14 billion dollars of Iranian oil, using Chinese currency.

We've blown through the planet's carbon budget for the year AND we're gonna make it worse.

We're sending American soldiers into a killbox on purpose...so Israel can annex southern Lebanon? Because Israel is the only one gaining anything from any of this.

This is all so goddamned insane. And the House and Senate are letting it happen because they need to protect pedophiles more than populations. I hate this stupid timeline so much.

@MissConstrue It's quite the accelerationist/worst-thing-possible kinda timeline, yes. And all those "we are voting this way because we are tired of US tax money being spent on war in Ukraine/egg prices are expensive/why is inflation increasing" people... not a peep.
@ai6yr The issue with burning alcohol isn't pollution so much as the grain should be feeding animals, not commercial fermenters. (I do think we should use alcohol in fuel, but it could be from otherwise discarded wheat straw and the like)

@ai6yr

They should just approve the sale of ethanol next to the gas pump. It won't lower prices but it'll make everybody notice them less.

@ai6yr

This continues the Trump administration's "governance through knee-jerk reaction" in favor of the last, loudest screamer

None of them have any real idea what they're doing

"But not all are convinced the move will substantially lower gas prices. E15 isn't available in all states and some places don't have the necessary infrastructure or enough of a supply of ethanol to ramp up use, said Kenneth Gillingham..."

"More corn used for ethanol also means less can be used for animal feed, said Jason Hill, a professor at the University of Minnesota who studies food, energy markets and environmental consequences

--> That means consumers could be trading lower costs at the pump for higher costs at the grocery store <--

"I think it's difficult to see when the ledger's settled, how this is a benefit for U.S. consumers," Hill said."

"...the announcement was targeted more at farmers hit hard by higher prices for the diesel they use to run their equipment and by fertilizer price hikes caused by the Iran war..."

@ai6yr @User47 I'm not worrying about smog. I'm worrying about screwing up my engine.
@mlanger @ai6yr Why not both? But I hear you. I pay way too much for ethanol free. There are few suppliers here so prices are wildly variable

@User47 @ai6yr Smog is not an issue where I live. Traffic is generally not an issue where I live, either. It's hard to be concerned about something that isn't noticeable.

It's well accepted that ethanol in fuel is not good for engines, especially small engines. I spend a lot of money to buy ethanol free fuel for all of my small engines, just to prevent costly and usually inconvenient carburetor repairs.

In a perfect world electric vehicles powered by renewable energy would be the solution.

@mlanger @User47 I hate dealing with clogged carbs! I took it upon myself to learn how to fix small engines some years ago, and ethanol fuel in those engines was most certainly the number one problem (clogs the carbs for sure!). Only Premium gas in generators now, run them dry... (converted one generator to trifuel to just avoid gasoline entirely).

@ai6yr @User47 I’ve got an 82-gallon fuel tank with solar powered pump on a trailer that I used for my helicopter biz. I’m probably going to repurpose it this year to store ethanol free fuel for my DR Mower, string mower, and ATV. The boat’s dingy motor (a 6HP Suzuki 4 stroke) already gets ethanol-free fuel β€” or at least it’s supposed to. It’s getting a carburetor clean now.

My Honda only gets premium fuel; it’s required. Occasionally, I’ll put ethanol free premium in. $$$ OUCH!

@mlanger @User47 LOL 82-gallons for a string mower might last you several centuries
@ai6yr @User47 The DR Mower and ATV are fuel hogs compared to the string mower. I bet I’ll go through 82 gallons in a year.
@mlanger @User47 Oh yeah, I'm sure the ATV would use that fuel, lol.
