Bit of a left-field PSA this, but… if you own an iPhone/iPad in the UK and:

- you DON'T own a credit card
- you DON'T have a driving license
- you have NOT had your Apple account for more than 18 years

…don't upgrade to iOS 26.4 if you want to install (or some cases, use) 17+ rated apps or stream 18+ films/tv on itvX, netflix, etc.

The update adds mandatory OS-level age verification to meet UK law and Apple doesn't currently accept passports (!) to prove age.

#Apple #iOS26

I'm not sharing this to argue the merits/flaws in the Online Safety Act or similar legislation as a general point or Apple complying – it has to; it's law – but signpost a specific real-world edge case…

I don't drive, and I've never owned a credit card. Suddenly that makes me 17 again (hurrah),

While it's always flattering when people assume I'm younger than I am, it's rather unfunny to be unable to use apps or services I pay for...

@omgubuntu In exactly the same boat here.

I've had an iPhone and an Apple account since 2010.

Got my first Apple laptop in 2004.

Learned to nerd on an IBM RS/6000 running AIX 3.2.5 (not counting the parental ZX81).

However, I'm apparently a child, because I don't like the idea of living on credit and I think the private car isn't that great an idea.

@omgubuntu It doesn’t have to.

It could decide to leave the UK market.

Then the government would have to face a very disgruntled citizenry.

Which is the sort of thing that might even bring down a government.

But we’re talking about a trillion-dollar corporation. So, of course, they would comply.

If the UK government told Tim Cook he had to shoot a puppy on live TV to stay in the UK, he’d do it, no questions asked and probably blame it on his fiduciary duty to shareholders or some shit.

Fuck, I hate corporations.

@omgubuntu

My understanding, FWIW, is that there is no such law currently on the UK statute book, nor imminently about to be on the UK statute book, and Apple are simply lying when they say UK law requires it.

@only_ohm My bad; perhaps I'm inferring it's a requirement, when it's just Apple ass-covering.

The fact OFCOM is giving quotes to the press about how pleased they are to see the age gating arrive, I assumed it was part and parcel of the OSA, compliance for which is overseen by OFCOM.

Either way, it's frustrating.

@omgubuntu if only you knew someone who's good at photoshop
@joeress @omgubuntu This could really goose the market in stolen credit cards… ツ
@joeress @omgubuntu there's an AI website for that...
@omgubuntu my iPad just rebooting after the installation, lol. Oh well.

@omgubuntu A phone not accepting a passport being considered a negative was not on my bingo card for today.

@landelare @omgubuntu I would imagine Apple does not want to (or is not allowed to) access the UK Passport database for data security reasons, so you are correct, this is the right approach.

Unfortunately their US-centric designers (where everyone has credit cards and a driving license for ID) have not catered for UK requirements - and the Government staff who have “worked closely with Apple” have not ensured that they do either.

@omgubuntu Apple account being older than 18 seems to not be enough according to some users.

@omgubuntu

Can confirm as my wife has this issue this evening following an iOS update.

This wasn't indicated prior to the update that this would be happening.

So what happens if you don't have a credit card or a passport (not everyone does)? 🤔

@omgubuntu I know a couple of people who can't get age verified on Steam because they don't have a credit card. This is so dumb.

It will be interesting to see what the hardware looks like 🙂

@omgubuntu the final, most concrete and tech loyalist agnostic reason to never buy an apple device and wow, it's a big one

I know google will likely do this too but at least you don't need an account, have more control of the updates and can freeze/remove play services on android devices

@viralobscurity @omgubuntu I think it's also time to focus on mobile Linux distributions like postmarketOS, mobian, etc.

I feel like with the recent Google changes that Android might really close off its source sooner or later, or bring other complications.

Some in that space aren't helping either.

Believe it or not, GrapheneOS (open source Android fork) is actually trying to argue that an iPhone is better than Linux mobile in terms of privacy, security and so on. I don't understand how a black box can compare to a fully trustable operating system.

We're better off supporting operating systems we can trust.

@f @omgubuntu Definitely preaching to the converted here

A Linux mobile device would be my ideal solution but I did hear there is some way to go on delivering a daily driver Linux phone

I am definitely one of the people that would switch to Linux once I could do everything I need on there

@omgubuntu

This moose has no valid photo-id (everything expired years ago, and the provisional driving licence was a sheet of paper only), but does have 3 credit (and 1 debit) cards. That said, I'm not prepared to put my ugly mug on t'Internet just to verify that I'm ancient and terrible. 3:O(>

The iPhone is a model 7 (I think), so too backlevel for this idiocy anyway.

@omgubuntu More like a left wing PSA. Stop using it.

@shwell I don't think politics comes into it.

It's currently a pragmatic, overnight reality: the update may install itself, and UK users – where it's far more common to have never owned a credit card, nor drive – can't use valid ID to prove their age.

The PSA is not, as the follow up notes, a grumble re: "why" age verification is now required to use Reddit or stream tv shows with naughty swears in, just a heads-up that without the items mentioned, folks can't.

"Stop using it" is moot.

@omgubuntu Politics is very relevant. There is a branch of politics that supports surveillance more so than the other. All the current 'updates', purportedly for issues like child safety are in reality moves to force surveillance on people. Gavin Newsom is championing 'age assurance' (Digital ID) for example.
