The many branches of the Fediverse

As more and more people are asking me about Mastodon I felt a need for a picture to point at, showcasing how the software known as Mastodon fits into the much larger concept of the Fediverse. I made this infographic to help myself and others explain the many different use-cases

@ChrisPirillo Is there an ActivityPub client which doesn't need a server to store and index the user data ? Where the server is just relaying messages and client does the long term storage ? Almost feels like I need to start my own personal mastodon server for this, but thats to much work :)
@chromedevice @ChrisPirillo There are several relay server implementations, two of the most popular seem to be:
- https://git.asonix.dog/asonix/relay
- https://github.com/yukimochi/Activity-Relay

@chromedevice @ChrisPirillo I think you have two major options.

1) run a single-user #ActivityPub server. Mastodon is not a good platform for this. Instead, check out

2) for read only, use RSS. https://mstdn.social/@feditips/108357998963885456

If you try a single-user instance, I’d love to hear what works for you!

FediTips has moved! (@[email protected])

RSS fans! You can follow any Mastodon account via RSS by just adding ".rss" to the end of the account's public profile URL. To find a user's public profile URL, click on their profile image within Mastodon. For example, if you click on FediTips' profile image you get this page in a new tab: https://mstdn.social/@feditips So, to follow FediTips through RSS, use this address: https://mstdn.social/@feditips.rss This will only show that account's public posts. Other posts will not be visible on the RSS feed. #RSS #MastoTips #FediTips #Mastodon

@ChrisPirillo learning a lot already 🙂
@neelibby ... drinking from the fire hose!
@ChrisPirillo I keep coming back to look at this, it’s so interesting
@bgp_writes ...yeah, I shared it for my own benefit, too!
@ChrisPirillo Second time I see this picture in my timelime - seems popular.
@ChrisPirillo I think Plume is missing from that diagram. https://joinplu.me/
Plume

@ChrisPirillo I posted this. It’s from Wikipedia
@ChrisPirillo para podcast cuál es la mejor?
@ChrisPirillo Hey Chris! - I'm a fan from back in the day. Great to see you here!
@ChrisPirillo awww, @matrix looking all cute on the as side
@ChrisPirillo So is Gnu Social like the Hurd to Mastodon's Linux?
@blueteamgoon ...I'll have to consult the Book of the Great Space Coaster.
@ChrisPirillo I don't see micro.blog or flickr.com…
@ChrisPirillo i wish that when people updated this graphic they had also included #Hometown, #Glitchsoc, #Calckey and #Akkoma (all robust forks).
Akkoma

@datn @ChrisPirillo

One issue with this is that the chart would be quite unreadable considering that there's more and more forks of these software as the time goes on, unless there's a separate graphics just to show their forks. Even #Akkoma itself has been forked by some instance operators as well.

The graphics is missing upcoming microblogging platforms like #GoToSocial & #Takahe though...
Tux Zone

@deltatux @ChrisPirillo graphic design is the passion of enough people to solve that problem. my beef is that that diagram obscures some pretty important fediverse projects and foregrounds some pretty unimportant ones.
@ChrisPirillo nothing about my favorite version, @firefish
@ChrisPirillo Worth sharing again and again!
@pch I still need to check out PeerTube and Frendica just to see what they’re like.
