The many branches of the Fediverse

As more and more people are asking me about Mastodon I felt a need for a picture to point at, showcasing how the software known as Mastodon fits into the much larger concept of the Fediverse. I made this infographic to help myself and others explain the many different use-cases

@ChrisPirillo Is there an ActivityPub client which doesn't need a server to store and index the user data ? Where the server is just relaying messages and client does the long term storage ? Almost feels like I need to start my own personal mastodon server for this, but thats to much work :)

@chromedevice @ChrisPirillo I think you have two major options.

1) run a single-user #ActivityPub server. Mastodon is not a good platform for this. Instead, check out

2) for read only, use RSS. https://mstdn.social/@feditips/108357998963885456

If you try a single-user instance, I’d love to hear what works for you!

RSS fans! You can follow any Mastodon account via RSS by just adding ".rss" to the end of the account's public profile URL. To find a user's public profile URL, click on their profile image within Mastodon. For example, if you click on FediTips' profile image you get this page in a new tab: https://mstdn.social/@feditips So, to follow FediTips through RSS, use this address: https://mstdn.social/@feditips.rss This will only show that account's public posts. Other posts will not be visible on the RSS feed. #RSS #MastoTips #FediTips #Mastodon
