@mauvehed fwiw I'm slowly bringing back to life a couple of old Barnes and Noble nook ereaders, restoring my own cloud service for them, since Barnes and Noble decided they didn't want to support old devices.

Progress blog forum post here: https://xdaforums.com/t/progress-on-a-diy-cloud-for-eol-nook-hardware-bnrv500-possibly-others.4782115/

Last night I finally got dynamic user registration working, rather than every device thinking it had the same static device identifiers.

Progress on a DIY cloud for EOL Nook hardware (BNRV500, possibly others)

(cross-post from r/nook because there's not much traction over there) Week of Mar 2 2026 progress: Frustrated that my old Nook Glowlight from 2013 works standalone, but hints at content up in the cloud that I can't download any more, I wondered...

@mauvehed @selfhosting This was a great read!! Maybe I’ll finally get around to doing this for all my Kindle books.
@mauvehed The irony is that copyright law is what ultimately criminalises jail breaking your device or removing protections from content you paid for. As Doctorow calls it: “felony contempt of business model.” It’s the same law that the tech companies wilfully ignore and violate en masse when it’s time for them to make profit on LLMs.
@paco The rules apply to people, not businesses.

@mauvehed Thanks for a great read and clear set of instructions. Just one thing (isn't there always?) The plugin DeDRM is not available in the list in my Calibre (9.5.0), although looking online did locate https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools

Is this the version you used?

@mauvehed Thanks for this too, though I am on a Mac it offered a few clues. Lord but they do not make this easy, do they? I feel very fortunate that I don't have any audiobooks.

Doing this slowly, one book at a time from my Kindle Paperwhite into Calibre for conversion. Which is fine.

@etp The more I spend my time trying to reclaim my data.. the more obvious it becomes just how badly they don't want us to do it.
@mauvehed I managed to get everything out except my most recent purchase, which might be my last. Need to check on ebooks from other sources. Not sure how best to keep an eye on this arms race.
