Debating my options to escape #systemd . (Currently on Arch Linux.)

FreeBSD was oddly the first thing I switched to after playing around with Red Hat 8 (Not RHEL!) when I was a preteen. Gentoo came later for me because of hardware issues at the time.
Didn't mean to include Debian.
@tk just pretend Devuan was autocorrected to Debian
Leaning towards #Gentoo because I have XFS and ext4 partitions that I don't want to have to reformat and restore.  #Linux
Hopefully compiling Firefox won't be a nightmare like back in the day since my desktop is significantly beefier now.
Still leaning towards Gentoo. What's nice is that I can compile most software in RAM because I have so much.
@[email protected] firefox-bin exists and is what i use. xD
@tk I like Debian but if your goal is to ‘escape’ systemd why is Debian on the list?
@benjamineskola Whoops.

@tk @benjamineskola

Debian without systemd is Devuan - as far as I know (not tested it myself)

@Photor @tk No, Debian without systemd is Debian. Systemd is the default but as far as I know it’s technically optional.

Devuan is entirely different: a Debian derivative. (With bad/naive political/ethical opinions, IMO.)

@benjamineskola @Photor Yeah, it does seem like some folks are swapping in other init systems on Debian based on what I looked up.

@benjamineskola @tk

Oh. Is it?

Sorry. My infos is outdated then. Last time I was looking for this is about 2 or 3 years old, when I was looking for Linux for old MacBook Pro (2011).

Tried OpenBSD, FreeBSD and ended with Fedora now (all working in general).

@Photor @tk No, this was always true. Systemd has never been mandatory on Debian.

@benjamineskola @tk

Ok. Sorry. I was not aware of what is going on there. I read something about Devuan the last days.

Outcome: no more mention of it from my side any more. Looks broken.

@tk

I have been using Artix with Dinit and it is nice.

@[email protected] You forgot artix.

it's basically arch - systemd + dinit/runit/s6 :3
@tk just stick with systemd
@tragivictoria @tk yeah just give them your passport and get the OS tied to your digital ID once that's rolled out. Can't wait for the ID ref to be an official HTML thing so my browser will be able to automatically tell everyone who I am and what I type and read while AI takes screenshots at regular intervals and TV listens to what I say! That will definitely make my life so much better, it's the best possible use of tax money and dev salaries!
@duckz @tk don't forget to throw away your electronics and move to forest.
@duckz @tk that being said, I agree that FOSS people should not comply, but at the same time it's not the end of the world.
@tragivictoria @tk ah the beautiful argument that you cannot have tech and privacy at the same time! I wonder how they even had light bulbs back in the days! Or how the world even worked until yesterday
@duckz @tk what the fuck are you talking about
@tragivictoria @tk lol bloke blocked me xD not lying, I was sure you were going to
@tk switch to Voidlinux, the fastest distro that exists, with runit, low resources. For me is the best
@[email protected] i do it on gentoo because I'd have to do even more silliness in *BSD for what I do (play games with friends).
@tk ✋ alpine linux fan

@tk

If you like the Arch/AUR ecosystem, go with Artix.

@[email protected] Gentoo (I am not kidding) if you're sick of Arch (really, who wouldn't be), or whatever BSD you fancy if you're sick of Linux
@[email protected] it depends on what you need. debian uses systemd, so i wouldn't use that. if you don't play proprietary video games, FreeBSD is probably fine. gentoo requires a lot of patience. if you want arch without systemd, artix may work better than standard arch with openrc. i tried to migrate from arch to artix a few days ago but ended up breaking something, instead of troubleshooting it through chroot i decided to install chimera linux (which uses dinit, but also seems to have some systemd components). the most well supported distro without systemd is probably alpine
