WOW.

With the news that Bluesky closed a $100M Series B (!!) last April and didn't tell anyone (??) until now, it's just become far more obvious that Bluesky is inching very close to its full enshittification era.

You don't raise that kind of money unless you're ready for *massive* capture of eyeballs and ecosystem control.

I am telling you right now, Bluesky in another year or two will look very, *very* different. (And tbh, it's not that great now.)

@jaredwhite urgh, is that a thing? Do you have a link?
Bluesky announces $100M Series B after CEO transition | TechCrunch

The additional funds have been used to scale Bluesky's team, while the company continues to develop Bluesky's app and the underlying ATProto that powers it.

TechCrunch
@dave @plaindocs @jaredwhite "The funding news has been strategically shared the week after Bluesky CEO Jay Graber announced she was stepping down from the lead role and transitioning to become chief innovation officer. The move had signaled both Graber’s desire to return to building and the need for the company to hire a chief executive who could drive Bluesky forward to commercial success."

I strongly doubt the timing of Jay's departure was a coincidence.

Bluesky's Series B closed last April but is being shared now, the week after its CEO stepped down.

@jaredwhite ya, how are we only finding out about this now?

@jaredwhite honestly, bsky seems like it has already failed to maintain momentum. I know people who moved there from twitter, but haven't bothered to log in for months.

There's just not a lot of content to drive people. I suspect that $100M will be its swan song as a relevant platform.

@jaredwhite I don't know what a Series B is but this sounds bad. I have nearly a thousand followers on bsky after I was added to a starter pack over there, but tbh my interaction levels aren't high at the moment.
@jaredwhite it's already a nazi-bar, so any more enshittifaction is just icing on the nazi cake.

@jaredwhite
The ultimate goal of chnazis now is to buy all media. To get a firm hold over the serfs minds, a threat they need to curb. The less people being out of the propaganda channels, the less they will need to denaturalize and put into the concentration camps already under construction.

The $100m here reminds me of the boomer generation of Americans being cut off the reality by #usnazis destroying 1000s of local newspapers all around the country. IIRC it started ~2010. The vehicle for taking down the (paper) press was Alden Global Capital.

By coincidence, 2010 is year of Citizens United, Roberts Court allowing mafia and Russian money to buy elections.

IMO Bsky will soon implement the same superb "algo" now peddling the messiah crap all over the tiktok. I wish I were mistaken.

@jaredwhite the reason why I and other sane folks are still using fedi

@jaredwhite “Bluesky is inching very close to its full enshittification era.”

They’ve been shit this whole time. Have some people been waiting for them to cross a certain threshold of shittiness before they acknowledged this?

@AnachronistJohn no kidding. Anything VC funded is on that arc. I have never understood the veneration of Jack Dorsey. Is it his beard or something?

@cass_m @AnachronistJohn if you can name one person who has praised jack dorsey I would be surprised.

he is not exactly widely liked.

@jaredwhite IIRC Corey Doctorow has minions running an independent BlueSky server. What happens to it? Does BlueSky just cut him off from the network?
@lemgandi @jaredwhite yes. corporate ringfencing works by ringfencing corporation controlled items to be inside the fence and cutting off non-corporation controlled items outside of the fence.
@falcennial @jaredwhite Bummer for the folks who set it up then. But he was right not to risk losing his work.
@jaredwhite Somebody make a Bluesky Theme for Mastodon to provide a place for when the refugees arrive.

@jaredwhite I keep saying - BlueSky is a ball sitting at the top of the same ramp Twitter rolled down and is desperate for the last nudge that makes it an outright Nazi bar.

They were never decentralized or federated and the whole corporate structure behind them is a built-in sabotage.

@jaredwhite Ughhh, Bain Capital Crypto! BlueSky might as well be bankrolled by he-who-shall-not-be-named (AKA, the Minotaur who turned the bird into X). Not looking forward to this. I don’t want BlueSky to fail. We need alternatives, even though I’m enjoying Mastodon.
@jaredwhite no matter how much money they have, they still won't be able to figure out how to make blocks private, anyway :P
@jaredwhite This very concern is why I ended up choosing the fedi over Bluesky.

@jaredwhite

They're too new. They don't get to get enshittified. They were shit to start.

@jaredwhite That’s why I left and came here and now also on Gander social
@jaredwhite Anyone who is objective could see this coming from the beginning. If it wasn’t obvious to people then, all doubt that they are nothing more a data trap should have been erased when the Regime’s Orc agencies were allowed to set up official accounts to distribute propaganda and surveil their users. Omigosh they concealed the funding and ownership of the crypto bro VCs - same people who paying off the Regime? Shocked, Shocked I say. 🙄
@lawyersgunsnmoney
I think it was obvious because while the protocol is open, the answer to the question "Can I run my own server and connect it to the network?" was always "Umm, ahem, not really, because...".
At the same time there were already hosters who would run a Mastodon instance just for you for a couple euros per month.
@jaredwhite

@danimrich @lawyersgunsnmoney we kept saying this was a necessary feature, and they kept telling us Nah, there's little reason to host the whole network, what's important is the individual user data pods.

Which seems utterly bonkers to me. Folks want on-prem and branded installations of plenty of other software. Why should a social networking app be any different?!

@jaredwhite how's this a surprise??

A social media created by the creator of twitter who is part of the venture capitalist powered silicon valley and pushed both crypto and nfts is not building bluesky for the love of the game?

Impossible i tell ya...

@jaredwhite all corporate owned social media looks like the same unusable dogshit because all corporate owned social media is the same unuseable dogshit.

there's nothing noteworthy or interesting about it.

people are just killing time on that that shit because they don't yet know they can have friendships that they own their access to, rather than friendships that elon zuckerberg owns their access to.

@jaredwhite look at their structure. bluesky has a CEO and venture investment. it's a profit-seeking corporation.

> In April 2025, Bluesky raised $100 million in Series B funding led by Bain Capital Crypto, with participation from Alumni Ventures, Anthos Capital, Bloomberg Beta, Knight Foundation and True Ventures.

the value of bluesky comes from the human users and the data. they are going to squeeze every last drop of value out of the data, and that means selling it as ai training data. bluesky is not a trustworthy website, i would never make an account or post anything on there.
