WOW.

With the news that Bluesky closed a $100M Series B (!!) last April and didn't tell anyone (??) until now, it's just become far more obvious that Bluesky is inching very close to its full enshittification era.

You don't raise that kind of money unless you're ready for *massive* capture of eyeballs and ecosystem control.

I am telling you right now, Bluesky in another year or two will look very, *very* different. (And tbh, it's not that great now.)

@jaredwhite Anyone who is objective could see this coming from the beginning. If it wasn’t obvious to people then, all doubt that they are nothing more a data trap should have been erased when the Regime’s Orc agencies were allowed to set up official accounts to distribute propaganda and surveil their users. Omigosh they concealed the funding and ownership of the crypto bro VCs - same people who paying off the Regime? Shocked, Shocked I say. 🙄
@lawyersgunsnmoney
I think it was obvious because while the protocol is open, the answer to the question "Can I run my own server and connect it to the network?" was always "Umm, ahem, not really, because...".
At the same time there were already hosters who would run a Mastodon instance just for you for a couple euros per month.
@jaredwhite

@danimrich @lawyersgunsnmoney we kept saying this was a necessary feature, and they kept telling us Nah, there's little reason to host the whole network, what's important is the individual user data pods.

Which seems utterly bonkers to me. Folks want on-prem and branded installations of plenty of other software. Why should a social networking app be any different?!
