Hi #fediverse. We need to talk about something.

While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a crow it came up that she has never been sat on by a cat. Like, not even once during childhood.

Another colleague admitted they also have never been sat on by a cat.

My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on by a cat.

@catsalad always against my will
@sortius @catsalad , my allergies and me sincerely empathize...! 🐈🀧
@catsalad if there are any people not being sat on by a cat, I'll volunteer to sit in their laps!
@catsalad are we planning to go through all the species..?
@tymwol It's for science!

I, for one, have never been sat on by a rhinoceros.
@catsalad Never sat on a crow? Who would do such a thing?

@catsalad Should also ask how many have been cat owners vs not
@froztbyte also the poor souls that have the wrong kind of histamine @catsalad
@catsalad It really depends on the cat. My mom's cat would climb on my chest. One of the cats my wife and I have now will climb on my wife's chest but not mine, and the other likes to lie against our hips but not on our laps. She will, however, come to my desk asking to be picked up and cradled for a few minutes, especially if I'm on a video call.
@catsalad current cat doesn't sit on laps but likes boxes. So that’s the compromise.
@catsalad old cat was like: "Oh that's a nice place to sleep for the next few hours!"
@fehlfarbe @catsalad Those tortillas turned out a bit burnt.
@catsalad proud cat bed person. Murphy the 22lb Maine Coon (rest in purrs) would pomf on my chest and purr in my face while I was watching teev.
@catsalad I suspect that the typical Fediverse denizen is feline biased. Your scientific survey may have statistical flaws. 😸
@catsalad You know the cat really likes you if they stand on you for a long time
@catsalad typing this while a cat is sat on me
@venite @catsalad +3 (cats, currently on me)
@catsalad used to have a cat that would sit on my shoulders while I did work on my computer. She would just wrap herself around like a scarf and purr :3
@jadedtwin @catsalad i have sputnik for that. Sometimes he tries to nap, but doesn’t work.
@catsalad the saddest "no" ever :<
@catsalad isn't that like half the point of humans?
@catsalad
I answered no. I'm deathly allergic. Love my puppers to sit on me.

@catsalad

What's... going on here? A *crow*? Are we going to get gradually weirder and weirder polls?

@catsalad uh yeah can we circle back to β€œmost people have never sat on a crow.” hwhat are you talking about lmao

@literally @catsalad

We put out food for the local stray cats, and noticed that the crows were stealing it, so we put an awning over the cat food, and the crow that was looking forlornly at said awning this morning was friggin enormous, and probably wouldn't be at all bothered by being sat on.

OK, s/he probably would have complained, but s/he was at least 20 inches beak-to-tail and one handsome monster.

We're probably not supposed to feed the cats, but it is illegal here to feed crows.

@djl @literally @catsalad
A crow that big sounds like a raven.

The only bird with crow in the name here is the hoodie crow (a bicolour version of the carrion crow in GB, but now regarded as a separate crow). Plenty of birds in the crow family here: rook, jackdaw, magpie, hoodie crow & maybe occasional Chough visitor (only this part of Ireland). There ravens here too, somewhere, but I've not seen them up close to be sure they are ravens.
We don't get the carrion crow,

@raymaccarthy @djl @catsalad would love pics of any of these corvids if available, they’re my favorite family of birds
@literally @djl @catsalad
They are very camera shy!
Some photos on my account.

@literally @raymaccarthy @catsalad

The crows here are nervous flighty things and are usually gone before I get even close to a window. My longest lens is 75mm, so it's pretty hopeless.

@catsalad
I think there's a bias here; your followers are through selection bias more likely to be cat people, and their social networks are likely to contain above average numbers of cat people too

As such, i shall, for scientific accuracy, *refrain* from boosting, as it logically follows that my reach would be biased as well

That or I'm distracting myself by typing random bullshit, pick a card either card

@catsalad I'm pretty sure that no cat ever sat on me. But when I was younger I also had a strong cat allergy so I wouldn't have wanted a cat to sit on me. I'm not sure whether the allergy is still there. But I had rabbits sit on me.
@catsalad
Very disappointed with the results of this poll where you can choose booth answers...
@titi
@catsalad I cant remember. Is that a no?

@catsalad Yeh "sat on a crow" is iffy

Is that meant to be "sat on by a crow"?

@catsalad I appreciate the fact that this is a multiple choice question. Because that's exactly how feline science is supposed to work. One of the many things we can learn from SchrΓΆdinger's cat!!
@catsalad I’ve sat on my cat multiple times. Would recommend as long as the cat is alive.
@catsalad I'm the kind of person who takes "oh my cat doesn't usually come up to people" as a challenge. Usually one I win.
@queerinsamite @catsalad Ahhh, the dying art of cat-flirting. You should pass your knowledge on to the next generation, sensei.

@Heartofcoyote
@catsalad

Cat whisperers are born, not made.

@catsalad I dont think a cat sat on me till I had my own in adulthood.
@catsalad I believe it counts if they sit up against your thigh or on the sofa behind your head. Not all of us have comfortable laps.
@Nazani @catsalad I had a cat who loved to sleep in the silverware drawer if someone left it open. Comfort isn't always a cat's priority. That being said, some cats are just not lap cats. I do think it counts if they sit against you (although maybe not for this poll?).
