Before becoming a politician, one should complete a mandatory 1.5 years of social service, divided into three-month periods:

— in nursing care
— in a daycare center
— in a school
— in a medium-sized company
— in retail
— on a farm

All unpaid and voluntary, of course.

@Strandjunker

Can they bring their photographers, biographer, and media team? 🤪

@isol @Strandjunker also they will learm more hate to people.

You can't teach empathy.
You can learn, yes, but teach - impossible.

@Strandjunker

An interesting idea, but it would limit candidates to only the wealthy class, or those the wealthy class hire.

@EthicalProfessor @Strandjunker

Yeah, unpaid labor gives an advantage to the wealthy. From what I gather, it's the main reason for unpaid internships: it's rare that anyone else can afford to work for free.

@EthicalProfessor @Strandjunker In addition, forcing people to have empathy by subjecting them to a dozen scenarios… better to find ways to grow a political class that has basic empathy beyond what they directly experience.
@Strandjunker I'm good with them being paid the going wage. I would add restaurant work.
@Strandjunker maybe everyone should spend a year in volunteer service, like this, as a condition for high school graduation. As far as the cost goes, we should have a UBI, folks.
@Strandjunker How do you propose we implement this?
@Strandjunker @paul_ipv6 You almost make it sound like a politician is supposed to be a civil servant.
@Strandjunker I think it should be paid, but you can't bring any savings with you and have to live on what they pay an average worker in that area
@Strandjunker That would certainly ensure only the wealthy participate. Congratulations!
@Strandjunker Or perhaps paid, but they have to live on the salary.
@Strandjunker This sounds like an excellent idea, although I'm not sure about the unpaid bit as it could skew things towards wealthier candidates (how much this happens in reality may vary between countries). Arguably, it might be better to require that they live on the normal pay in those sectors.

@Strandjunker Nice range.

Did you come up with that yourself?

@Strandjunker I wouldn't want to be dependent on a "social service helper" who does this just to advance their career.
@Strandjunker please include a basic civics test 🙏🏽
@Strandjunker nothing wrong with getting paid. It should reinforce the notion individuals who work in social services do not get paid enough.
In addition, no salary would limit political applicants to only the independently wealthy.
Of course, that’s a implicit requirement for higher levels of office but shouldn’t be, and definitely not for local and state officials.

@Strandjunker

the story goes that Socrates had made a claim that all politicians be required to study philosophy. A student then asked, "So why don't you go into public office?" whereupon Socrates is said to have replied, "Because I don't know anything about politics."

@Strandjunker
In light of Restore becoming popular, I suggest we ditch the “farm” idea, we don’t need any more Rupert Lowe or Jeremy Clarkson clones, one of each is enough

@transfemmegabriellamontez @Strandjunker

I don't think they do the actual farm work though

@Strandjunker

And a pre-emptive one year in jail - just to save time afterwards.

@Sheep_Overboard well, more like, get yer complementary NACC Waiver Coupon. @Strandjunker
@Strandjunker but first a test if the person is a narcist.

@Strandjunker
Instead of unpaid, I think a fairer thing would be allowing the standard paycheck of their position, but they are only allowed to live of off that paycheck. Meaning they will need to move into whatever apartment they can afford with that paycheck and will not be allowed to use any of their possessions during that time. Of course, they may request an exemption for up to 30 items, each of which is under $100 just so they have clothes and whatnot.

But yeah, forcing politicians to live like normal people is definitely something that should be done.

@Strandjunker

If there wasn’t so much money in fucking politics, thanks to billionaires and they are pet Supreme Court member William Powell Junior. You could have people like that running for office. Sometimes they do. The grovelling for money filters out people deliberately.

@Strandjunker Good start. Would also be good if anyone running for public office had to be screened for narcissism, sadism, and psychopathy...
@Strandjunker I'd suggest a few weeks in an Emergency Room, a dumpsite, and a wastewater treatment plant, too.
@Strandjunker Highly recommend the “farm” but not just any “farm” try “subsistence living on a homestead” and you’ll realize how much bloody work it all is!! And just for a bowl of oatmeal in the morning 😹(talking from experience here)😹

@Strandjunker

they are mostly sociopaths.. it wouldn't mean anything to them. Just one more box to check off while climbing the ladder of power.

@Felis_Catus_Domesticus @Strandjunker

Might be uncomfortable enough to at least make the worst of them veer off the political path. (This is not to say they wouldn't veer into something more dangerous for society, but it might at least slow them down?)

@Felis_Catus_Domesticus @Strandjunker

Yeah, well, a cavy can dream....

@cavyherd @Strandjunker

True dat..

You know ultimately it's the voters who vote them in to power.. over and over again. I'de rather start my troubleshooting there. Look at how close the election was. He won by 1.5% FFS, but talks like he has some broad mandate granted to him by the majority of the population. Again, they believe their own lies, and lying comes naturally to them.

@Felis_Catus_Domesticus @Strandjunker

Yeah, well, there's a reason the right has been systematically destroying public education for the last 40-50 years....

@cavyherd @Strandjunker

They are such good liars because they actually believe their own bullshit..

That's hard to counteract externally. To counteract that habit of mind internally within them, forget it.. just forget it.

@cavyherd @Strandjunker

Imagine anything slowing down a sociopath of her stature.. I can't imagine it.

@Strandjunker If they've already done three months of one of these, would they still have to do three months of it or could they skip it? Asking for a friend who has done retail work and babysitting
@Strandjunker On the contrary, I think they should be paid exactly the median wage in that job for people with 0-3 months experience, and live exclusively on that with no supplemental income.
@Strandjunker Make it two years, and add gastronomy (restaurants, cafes) and/or fast food ('burger flipping') to that list.
@Strandjunker !Gasp! Are you insinuating in any way that a (saints be praised) Politician should in any manner be aware or qualified to hold office?
I am shocked! Shocked I tell you!

@Strandjunker

Too short.

5 years, and they also need time in the lowest economic areas of the country - state - city.

And they still need term limits.

@Strandjunker
And upon becoming a politician, each one should be immediately beheaded.

There ARE NO good politicians. Professional liars and servants of the oligarchs, every last one of them.

@Strandjunker I would also argue for a few others like maintenance and janitorial work.

Oh, and you only get the most basic healthcare available

@Strandjunker

Can we also please require them to pass the basic exam that immigrants are required to take to gain their citizenship?

@Strandjunker

Yeah, not sure I'd want a fucking huge chunk of them anywhere near a school tbh.

A 6 - 12 month stint on a minimum wage, living in a low-income area, and a contract signed to say they can't cop out earlier and still be allowed to run, should take care of most of them tbh.

@CaptiveSteel @Strandjunker ideally they’d need to be hired into each job like anyone else. Application, interview, background checks, lousy job market, the whole shebang. No special treatment whatsoever. No private support during the process.
@pewterbaw @Strandjunker
Exactly. No cheap Dr visits, a complete dunger for a vehicle (or none at all), and as for a job? It should be in a public-facing role, but NOT a government department. Retail, behind a bar, waiting tables, rubbish collection, janitorial, that kind of thing.

@pewterbaw @Strandjunker

We had a politician a cpl of decades ago attempt to 'survive' on a benefit in a grandiose attempt to 'show' us how we exaggerate the hardships some people lived under.

She lasted a cpl of weeks, and then her kid got sick. Aaannnnd that was the end of that!

Oddly enough, she didn't get voted back in. 😉 😎

@Strandjunker After this, the guy would not only not care about us, "lower-class people," but also hate us with passion.

@Strandjunker

Unpaid for the rich.

But paid for working class people. Otherwise they just couldn’t enter politics.
