This echoes why I don't do FB, but also why I won't use a service where 2 Factor Authentication must be done on WhatsApp
And they respond like I'm the one being unreasonable

@TheSwiv This is a screenshot of a Twitter post by a user named "democracy diva" with the handle "[@]democracydiva". The post includes a circular profile picture on the left showing a person with dark hair and glasses. The tweet text reads verbatim: "Mark Zuckerberg created a website to rank his female classmates by their appearance and it ended up destroying democracy, in case you're wondering about the consequences of toxic masculinity". To the right of the username, there is a down arrow icon. The background is white with black text for the content.

@TheSwiv using altbot to generate the alt text for this image kinda defeats the purpose.

You could have copied and pasted the post's content, it would have been better.

@altbot
Does Mark Zuckerberg really care about democracy?
@TheSwiv I find that I get a more positive response nowadays, people do actually understand when I say I don't do facebook because I don't want to support fascists.
@eq That is progress. I had it this week where it was like I was the problem. So I closed the account and took my business elsewhere

@TheSwiv how do you read "a private company, through decades of anti-anti-trust, and through the need for surveillance capitalism for its ad market, has so much power it can topple democracies and aid in genocide" and you attribute it to "toxic masculinity". Girlboss darling Sheryl-fucking-Sandberg is the architect of the advertising model that caused most of this ffs

EDIT: OP this isn't directed at you, but at the person in the screenshot

@TheSwiv I still have FB, though it has been put under "profile at risk" threats, probably due to my political posts. The reason I remain is that the friends I have there (all of them) are actually people that I have met or gone to school with (in South Africa). It is then difficult to leave, however, I have not changed anything in what I post or comment on in any way whatsoever. If they block me - I will feel substantiated as well as flattered 😁 and will add FO to my reaction...
@TheSwiv it was all effectively doomed from the start - any trustful relationship - since there was no moral basis to begin with. And I knew this from the start. Nobody around me had the moral compass to detect it
@TheSwiv who are the people who said that you are unreasonable for having self-respect?
@falcennial some local social clubs only use FB . There are a couple of local businesses and services that require 2FA via WhatsApp.
It's madness

@TheSwiv

Well, the number of eprson that enjoyed its platforms with no-question is an important part of the issue. Making the world conscious of that link is both necessary and sufficient (despite it alone is just putting a weight of responsibility that seems unbarable to many, other actions matters a lot)

@TheSwiv Yep. I won't touch FB, insta or whatsapp, all toxic brands. Life is fine without them!
@TheSwiv
The number of people I’ve told “Sorry, I don’t use (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram).
@TheSwiv I'm in the process of moving off anything META. This brought me to mastodon. I'm open to other suggestions.
@TheSwiv I was out after Cambridge... What's amazing was as the "tech" guy for friends and family when I told them why no one left themselves..
@TheSwiv Also his tech stack is b*llocks

@TheSwiv

Patriarchy was always going to end up sacrificing its own children.

@TheSwiv Genuine question, what's wrong with 2FA using WhatsApp (apart from having to give your phone number)?

@Theotime812 @TheSwiv
Having a Meta account?

Supporting the fascists just by taking part?

Wondering how much personal data they’re getting from you just by having the app installed?

Worrying about having your amount compromised in the WhatsApp equivalent of SIM-jacking?

And finally… it’s a solution looking for a problem. 2FA apps already exist and don’t require a phone number or WhatsApp account or any other random things, they Just Work.

@TheSwiv @gareth I agree with dedicated apps being better anyway. I didn't really see using Whatsapp as having a Meta account (since you can just not link it to Facebook or Instagram) but it's debatable ig. Didn't think of the rest though. Thanks for the reply
@TheSwiv Unfortunately in the EU it's common to have WhatsApp as the *only* option for a lot of services, including hospitals.
@reflex @TheSwiv how it works with hospitals? Could people without smartphones or particular apps be left without needed care?
@madargon @TheSwiv It's a good question. You can of course go in and check, or call on the phone, but for updates, wait times, etc they basically put you on WhatsApp.
@TheSwiv
> Facebook destroyed democracy
🤔
@notyourfanboy
Are the majority of Facebook users aware of that?
@TheSwiv that sums it up quite nicely
@TheSwiv what kind of assholes mandate #WhatsApp?
