Heylo I’m new to Mastodon. I really like the idea of the fediverse as a way to assert our digital sovereignty 🇨🇦, so I joined Mastodon thought I’d try it out.
I’ve lived in Winnipeg MB for a bit now, and while I don’t dislike the Jets I must admit that my heart is with the Oilers.
If anyone knows some good people to follow to get an indepth analysis of any given nerdy subject, then please let me know. Those people would be fun to follow.

@chimpchomp Welcome to the fediverse (which is larger than just Mastodon, but don't worry, it will come naturally).
The best way to start is not to look for individual people to follow, but instead, follow hashtags you're interested in and have fun with the posts you find - like, retoot, and above all comment, get into discussions.
Over time, you may also find individual people worth following, and some people will start following you as they notice you.

I see you’re already in contact with feditips. Suggest you check out their https://fedi.directory/ for some accounts and hashtags to follow.
Some cool things to know in response to your introductory post:
- hashtags such as CdnPoli, CanPoli, MBPoli, Canada, and Manitoba will fill your feed with lots of domestic content
- as you can see from my profile, there are a fair number of us who are enthusiastic about different entertainment fandoms, if there’s one you like, following the hashtag and seeing who you find interesting to follow is a way to start
- there are regular watch parties for diverse television shows and movie genres — most of which are set up to take advantage of free streaming options — such as #AllStarTrek, #Monsterdon etc.
— if someone or a group are posting a lot, you can mute them for a brief period using the browser view (that has more options than the apps)
— if someone you find interesting to follow is like me and boosts a lot, and you don’t want to see all those boosts, you can filter those out and just get their original posts and replies.

I’m going to second the recommendation to follow hashtags, but also regularly search hashtags you don’t want to actually follow but might be interested in the people who are engaged there. I’ve found many great people just parachuting into hashtags once every few months and checking out replies.
To those newly here from Bluesky, the thing I've seen people struggle with most is getting started curating their feed. Other services have an algorithm that shoves stuff in your face. Here, you need to actively build an interesting feed yourself. A few ideas: (1) when you find interesting people, see who follows them and who they follow; (2) when you find an interesting instance (mastodon server), look at its public feed; & (3) when you find an interesting hashtag, you can just follow it.
