so uh
we rescued a set of 4K movie film scanners

does anyone need a set of 4K movie film scanners

if you have a need for a cinema film scanner (or can give it a good home!), and can arrange to have it transported from the Seattle area, message me on fedi or e-mail me at [email protected]

yes they're Spirit 2Ks
i believe both of them have the 4K upgrade things

we also got this prism cover off of an old ITK yfront machine, which was already missing nearly all of its internals

it's not useful but it certainly looks cool

here's what was behind a panel behind the yfront panel

with cinema film scanners, you can:

digitize some archival footage!
admire them!
fill your jellyfin library with filmrips!

@alyx if you're seriously just looking to unload them, lets talk. I'll be happy to figure out logistics to get one or both of them to our facility in GA, and figure out how to use them. I can't pay what they cost, but I can pay something.

We don't use scanners when we're archiving film right now because I can't afford one, but I have a number of legitimately one of a kind films (usually camera negatives from kinoscopes, or other TV related stuff) and dozens of less rare but only available in potato quality films I would adore the opportunity to properly digitize.

@ajroach42 we're not looking to sell them, just re-home them to somewhere that can use them! we rescued them for just the cost of a liftgate rental and aren't looking to make a profit flipping these

we were told that both work, but from poking around inside only one of them currently has a lamp module in it

I think this is realistically a one works with one for spare parts scenario

@alyx alright, that's good for me. We'll figure out logistics on this end and be in touch?
@ajroach42 @alyx This is an excellent example of social media working. May the scanners arrive soon, ready to help digitize some film! 👍

@alyx standard mk2 flux capacitor…

Why do you tempt us with these things?

@alyx nice find, without the 4k upgrade the price for one unit was something like one million dollars...
@alyx holy fuck.. awesome
@alyx this is so incredibly @ajroach42 -coded

@rey @alyx @ajroach42 @djsundog

my first thought was "how easy is it to get that to GA?" (I know its a long way and that kit is heavy and bulky, but in USA you often don't need extra driving licence to drive large vehicles if its not a commercial venture 😉 )

@vfrmedia @rey @alyx @ajroach42 I mean, I moved here from there, with my wife, our dog, and three cats in the car with me for three days. I doubt the film scanners would require nearly as much attention during the nightly stops…
@vfrmedia @ajroach42 @alyx @rey and just over a ton for the both of ‘em? that’s uhaul territory for sure haha

@djsundog @alyx @vfrmedia @rey Oh my god that would be Absolutely incredible.

Think about how much better our archival work would be with film scaners instead of telecine machines!!

but we're literally on the other end of the country... I'd need a little help aranging the logistics.

@ajroach42 @alyx @vfrmedia @rey I mean, if they have loading assistance on that end and you foot the bill for a flight to seatac and the rental truck and fuel I’m down to do the driving haha
@djsundog @alyx @vfrmedia @rey that's the easiest option. Shit, I'm down.
@ajroach42 @djsundog @alyx @vfrmedia @rey this is like watching people fall in love on discord, but more usefully to humanity

@ajroach42 @djsundog @alyx @vfrmedia @rey I'd offer to drive a leg across the Midwest if I didn't already have other imminent travel right now

Edit to add: please feel free to ping me if you end up arranging a pony express style transport plan. I could donate a day of my time to the cause if the timing works out. I also have a minivan I can put into freight mode if we're trans loading, or I could invest in a tow hitch like I've been strongly considering for a while and tow a small trailer (emphasis on small)

@djsundog @ajroach42 @vfrmedia @rey as long as that u-haul has a liftgate, sure
@alyx @djsundog @ajroach42 @vfrmedia now is the time when we get to find out who in Seattle has a forklift license
@rey @alyx @ajroach42 @vfrmedia you don’t need a license for a forklift, just $100 and a driver at the nearest soda bottling plant who’d like a free long lunch across town
if you are living in the US and are a nerd, owning a powerful vehicle that can pull your enclosed trailer that you also own is a must lol

@alyx I do hope they end up at the Internet Archive and we'll soon have a lo-fi 35mm archiving stream!
@alyx i have a genuine question: how
@hypha @alyx That was also my first question.
"Rescued" leaves it open to imagination.
Raid on Entebbe? Pulled from a raging river?
@alyx Any way to ship this internationally? AMAZING!
@alyx @etchedpixels Maybe the internet archive could use this? :)
@alyx I'd loooove that, but my flat (and my cat) said no unfortunately... 😅
@faaab @alyx
Oh nice !
I have few 35mm movie and trailers films. I would be happy to get it but I'm in France and I don't know where to put these big things
@alyx does @mediaarchaeologylab or @internetarchive need something like this?
@Crazypedia @alyx @internetarchive we don't... but if they are still available we can ping the cinema studies program here on campus...
@alyx Eat your heart out, cam rips 🤣
@alyx I believe the people around anakata could use one? ;)
@alyx @nblr i would love to have one! But i have no place for it 😢. And no films to scan 😬.
@fernsehmuell @alyx Same! “That would make a splendid addition to the cinema hall and the movie collection in the southern wing of my manor, oh, wait… right… I don’t have a manor!”
@alyx could the @internetarchive do awesome things with this?? @textfiles

@alyx

Shiny... 😍

Sadly, wrong continent. 😩

@alyx anybody got a contact @ Hollywood Theatre to send this to? #pdx #hollywoodtheatre
@boyago @alyx I was just thinking the same thing
@FeloniousPunk @boyago @alyx library at UW might also be good to ask, since they're in town
@alyx cinematography.com forums might be a good place to mention this
@alyx perhaps the Pacific film archive? [email protected]
@alyx have you already reached out to Scarecrow? they're probably your best bet for finding an actual home for these

@alyx

@hex @Thomas either of you able to use this??
