@lritter By now, really have to go with no, but mostly because externalities keep ruining it
@lritter I spent time with computers when I was about 3 years old, so I think I can safely answer yes to this question.
@lritter in fact if I didn't have to use them for work, I'd spend more time doing fun computing. Or even if I was using them for work but doing cool stuff.
@lritter yes bc my tools are an extension of my body!

@lritter I often dream of a peaceful life without computers, but I love them and I'm good with them.

I'd probably be healthier if they didn't exist. I'd also be a chemist.

@lritter

Absolutely. I started working on rebuilding modern computing to make it better serve the needs of normal humans over 20 years ago. The things that I do that pay the bills are creating building blocks for that. If I had unlimited funding, I’d do the same thing, only more so.

@lritter yes. I would actually spend more time with computers if i didn't regularly have to deal with the revolting parts. It still feels absolutely great when I'm able to focus on something meaningful to me for six hours straight. But then something comes up because something always comes up.

And I still consider myself one of the lucky ones. Literally zero assholes I have to deal with for work. Just lots of good people stressed for different reasons. Mostly caused by computers.

@lritter I don't have to anymore, and when that happened, I switched from the Windows ecosystem to the Apple ecosystem for greater enjoyment.
@lritter Yes but not doing the same things.
@lritter yes, although: i can't imagine how anyone could now live a life without them?
@lritter yes but it would be all retro UNIX workstations
@lritter
I don’t know. The older I get, the more the idea of living in the woods completely off grid appeals to me.
@gareth sounds romantic.
@lritter Ooh, I'm very much in the minority. Been using the buggers for work for over 40 years and I've just decided to change careers.
@davep
me too. Immersed in them for years.
Now realise there’s grass needs touching.
@lritter Yes, am a freakin' nerd and I love it.
@lritter
I feel a little dishonest, since 98% of all the time I've spent on computers, I didn't have to 🤪
@lritter i need to get my brain tickled by dank memes periodically. if i could do that without touching a computer, i would probably abstain!
@lritter @donkey I missed this but I would have said Yes

@lritter I voted yes, because they are amazing tools and I think they (should) really help people connect, allow for better communication, and help spread knowledge.

Although, I wonder all the time if they answer actual real needs, and I really wonder if we can actually afford them: make them without hurting people and without polluting the planet.

@tomi yep i know that guilt. there is definitely excess: we make faster machines, and this gain is quickly devoured by sloppily written software.

but where we are diligent, software is built like a tank, needs little memory, little hardware and lasts us forever. so this will not go away.

also: we need computers to manage the post-scarce reality that awaits us after capitalism has died.

@lritter I seek freedom from torture, harassment, and enslavement by my lying, theiving, violent pedophile rapist family.
