If only Carney had the courage to say something like this on behalf of Canadians...

Prime Minister Sanchez of Spain:
“Because the question is not whether or not we are in favour of the Ayatollahs. No one is. Certainly not the Spanish people and of course not the Spanish government. The question, rather, is whether or not, we are on the side of international law and therefore, of peace.”

instead we get waffling and backtracking.

in case you believe Leavitt that Spain is now allowing US forces to use Spanish bases.... the Foreign Minister of Spain disabuses her of that belief.

Spain’s Foreign Minister Albares, calls out Karoline Leavitt on her lie that Spain had agreed to cooperate with the US in its illegal war: “She may be the White House spokesperson, but I am Spain’s Foreign Minister, and I can assure you that our position remains unchanged.”

@chris

In case you believe Leavitt, you need your head examined.

Like most of this administration’s spokespeople, Leavitt is utterly indifferent to the facts.

@chris Love the part about defending the same values whether we talk about Ukraine, or Gaza, or Greenland or Venezuela.

Simple, direct, and consistent.

@chris Yes, although watch the EU and EC backing Spain as Trump threatens to cut off all trade with Spain. We need stronger allies...
@chris Same here. In Holland, the country of the ICC and ICJ, so far no clear codemnation. I am so jealous of Spain. We all deserve leaders like Sanchez.
@bernavv @chris echt tijd voor een demonstratie wat mij betreft. Dit moeten we gewoon expliciet eisen.
@bernavv @chris @regendans Based on what people in NL vote for, no "we" don't.

@chris

He couldn’t be more right!

@chris

And Starmer.

@chris me gusta todo que dice.
@chris Carney is an amoral banker (still think he's better than the Conservative Party option, though Carney is pretty much a conservative). He does what money wants and quite frankly, I think we have underestimated how ruthless a guy has to be to become the top banker. But when oil prices spike due to a cut in international supply, Canadian crude (probably the most expensive oil in the world) becomes profitable again and money is happy.
@chris courage is the wrong word. You're being manipulated.
@chris other political leaders should stop being cowardly and join with the Spanish PM with strong words for the US president!
@chris ditto pissweak Albanese in Australia
@chris same for our new prime minister Jetten. Sanchez is uniquely taking the stage, the whole western world owes him an enormous debt.
@chris I fully agree with Spain. Note that France has tweaked its opinion from "Iran is bad" only during weekend and yesterday it became "Iran is bad, but Israel+USA are driving an illegal war and called for a cease fire.
@jfmezei good to hear. Though I have separate concerns about Macron's recent eagerness to increase their nuclear weapon stockpiles :(
@chris Couple of observations: Spain's trade with the US is microscopic compared to Canada's. Also, Spain does not have an 8,800 km shared border with the US. Nevertheless, I applaud Sanchez's boldness.
@humourmetom we had the same border in 2003. and yes, the us administration was very different but I would argue it is far more important to stand up to the bully today than ever in our history.

@chris

to be fair PM Sanchez has been PM - in politics - longer than Carney, who is an economist first, and a diplomat second.

Spain is an 'old country' that's seen a lot of history happen...

Also, Canada sleeps on the same (continental) bed(rock) as the USA, and they would love to just turn over and rape us.

@Sassinake
It's not even just the fact that Carney won't stand up to Trump — although IMO that's bad enough on its own. It's also that he's calling the US our "ally" and actively pushing their propaganda:

Carney continues to lie about Iran's nuclear capabilities and aims, calling them a "nuclear threat" either today or yesterday. Both the IAEA *and* CIA agree that no Iranian nuclear program exists. Yet its supposed existence was the entire pretext for the US and Israel's unprovoked attacks. Carney is going out of his way to help Trump and Israel by running political & rhetorical cover for them.

This can't be explained away as naiveté, in my opinion.
@chris
@patatas @Sassinake I truly wonder what Carney thought during the run up to the Iraq War when there was at least an attempt by the US Administration to dupe the world into a nuclear threat from Iraq, and Chrétien read the room in Canada, and refused.
@chris
Great point, we have been here before!
@Sassinake

@chris @patatas @Sassinake

Chretien refused to involve Canada militarily in the invasion of Iraq by the USA. I don't remember his rhetoric around the decision, but I do remember that he refused to join the 'Coalition of the Willing.'

On behalf of Canada, Carney has refused to join in the invasion of Iran by the USA. His rhetoric is disappointing, but we will not join this military venture either.

Chretien was dealing with Bush Junior, and Carney is dealing with Trump. To me, Carney has to walk much more softly than any other leader in the world except Claudia Scheinbaum in Mexico.

What Canada does is MUCH more important than what Carney says. Let's stay grounded in reality, eh?

Whole this shit is going on, Carney is travelling to three countries and strengthening trade relations with each while also addressing the Parliament of Australia. I imagine figuring out the right thing to say to every random question from reporters may not be at the top of his mind.

@northernlights
> "What Canada does is MUCH more important than what Carney says."

Sure! So why did the Liberals take Roshel on a trade mission to the US even after the company had signed a deal with ICE for armoured vehicles?
Why are we putting advance payments down for MORE F-35s?
Why does ICE still have offices in Canada?
Why haven't we cancelled the safe 3rd country agreement?
Why do we continue to send arms to Israel?
Why did we cancel the DST?
Why is the President of Palantir Canada still on the PM's Council for Canada-US Relations?

At some point, the Carney government's support for the fascist USA becomes a pattern.
@chris @Sassinake

@northernlights @patatas @Sassinake all true.

However, here we are. Carney found a voice in Davos, where did that go? He had a voice a year ago during the election, where did that go?

To my mind, he is not walking his talk, not even close.

Mexico sent help to Cuba immediately.
We did not.

Sheinbaum called for Peace on Monday (https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/mexicos-sheinbaum-calls-peace-following-182719385.html)
We did not.

Instead, Carney waffles while our batshit neighbour shoots his mouth off and waves around a loaded gun.

Ya, we can try to hide and not say anything that might upset the lunatic and recalibrate with every badly received headline….

Or we could carry ourselves with some modicum of respect, because if we want to make deals with the world, integrity matters.

Mexico's Sheinbaum calls for peace following US Middle East strikes

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum called for peace following U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran. She blamed a weakened UN for the war.

Yahoo News
@patatas War is money and Carney is a money man. Pretty sure the folks he works for (not us) want this war.
Canada PM Carney says unable to rule out military role in Iran war

Canadian leader also said the US-Israeli attacks on Iran appear to be ‘inconsistent with international law’.

If only Carney had the courage to say something like this on behalf of Canadians...

Difference:
Carney is a spineless turncoat only acting to protect his position not the people of the nation, Canada.
