Law enforcement officials say an anonymous tipster known only as “John” helped crack the case of two Brown University students' deaths and the wounding of nine others. The tipster's information led police to identify Claudio Neves Valente as the suspect. Anxiety and frustration had plagued the Providence community until police announced late Thursday that they found the suspected gunman dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. John recognized Valente from police images and suggested looking into a grey Nissan. John provided additional critical details to investigators, helping solve the case.
The USA's continuing attrition against Venezuelan small boats in the Caribbean has now reached a death toll of over a hundred.
Noam Chomsky always used to point out: if you want to understand how power works in international relations, in a case like this reverse the protagonists & ask what would then be happening?
So, if Venezuelan armed forces had attacked a number of small US boats in the Caribbean, killing their crew, how would that now being playing out?
I think we know!

Reusing, recycling and repurposing batteries can reduce dependence on hard to obtain critical minerals and create a $9 billion industry, according to energy analysts. India’s battery demand is expected to rise 40 times by 2050 with EVs accounting for most of this increase. Creating a circular system by recovering materials now lost as scrap can potentially create 100,000 green jobs and meet nearly 40% of the country’s demand for minerals like lithium, nickel and cobalt, according to a study by climate think tank RMI. However, key challenges such as formalizing a largely informal sector of workers who recycle waste and finding the billions of dollars of investment needed to grow the sector at scale will need to be overcome.

European Union leaders have agreed to provide a massive interest-free loan to Ukraine to meet its military and economic needs for the next two years. “We have a deal. Decision to provide 90 billion euros of support to Ukraine for 2026-27 approved. We committed, we delivered,” EU Council President Antonio Costa said in a post on social media. The money — worth $106 billion — will be raised by the EU on capital markets. The leaders worked deep into Thursday night to reassure Belgium that they would provide guarantees to protect it from Russian retaliation if it backed a “reparations loan” for Ukraine, but in the end the leaders did not use that option.
