Quit ChatGPT: right now! Your subscription is bankrolling authoritarianism

As a historian, I’ve studied the major consumer boycotts of history. We can take down ChatGPT and send a powerful signal to Silicon Valley, says author and historian Rutger Bregman

The Guardian

Worth noting that while QuitGPT lists Claude as an alternative, they're definitely not the "good guys".

"One might take this to be somewhat altruistic — Dario Amodei doesn’t want the US military to hit civilians — but remember: Anthropic is totally fine with the US military using Claude for anything else, even though hallucinations are an inevitable result of using a Large Language Model."

@state Can't seem to be able to load this article, but from https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/mar/01/claude-anthropic-iran-strikes-us-military

"Anthropic objected, pointing to its terms of use which do not allow Claude to be applied for violent ends, to develop weapons or for surveillance."

To their credit, I guess.

US military reportedly used Claude in Iran strikes despite Trump’s ban

Trump calls Anthropic a ‘Radical Left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real World is all about’

The Guardian
@state Although you could criticize them for having a deal with the US military at all, of course.

@stefan Nah, it's all marketing, nobody refuses those juicy government contracts.

The new arms race is to produce the most efficient, whatever that might mean to anyone, autonomous weapons system possible. No government will invest in "AI for peace" at this point. The next conflict after this one (or rather it's continuation once sides are clear and everyone is armed) is gonna be about terminators, drones and AI tanks marching through people.

Anthropic's Claude AI being used in Iran war by U.S. military, sources say

Two sources familiar with the U.S. military's use of artificial intelligence confirm that the U.S. used Anthropic's Claude AI model over weekend for the attack on Iran — and is still using it.

@stefan Happy to share. I've never subscribed to ChatGPT.
@redcrew Yeah, I don't know how many people on here actually do use it, but good to spread awareness of this campaign.
@stefan I'm surprised there was a million subscribe to that "thing". Who knew. I hope the campaign goes up.
#quitgpt
@stefan Yeah, I work in the adjacent area so I have had a subscription just to keep up, but now I'm pulling out, just waiting for my data to to be exported and then I will cancel it.

@stefan Now take the next step, folks, and boycott all LLMs.

Anthropic was used to bomb Iran, no matter their current agreement.

@stefan because people has to pay to use it, really?
@stefan I do not have a subscription, but I'm very happy to share this🥰
@gelsomore645 Thank you for spreading the word!
@gelsomore645 @stefan well l do not have sub. Too not cuz of this cuz l have no money to spend on it

@musluman @stefan you are not losing anything special, if course if you do not need it for work.

In any case, there are new tools being developed such as Le chat by Mistral in Europe (the basic version is free of charge - https://chat.mistral.ai/chat) or NanoGpt (limited free model https://nano-gpt.com/models/image).

I didn't subscribe for choice, but I'll try LeChat, whose privacy policy follows the EU one

Le Chat

Chat with Mistral AI's cutting edge language models.

Mistral AI
@gelsomore645 @stefan not for work it usually for coding or translate which mistral can help
@stefan i gotta say, ROFL on this one.
European alternatives to ChatGPT | European Alternatives

ChatGPT is a generative AI chatbot from the American company OpenAI

European Alternatives
@stefan Getting your chats zipped and emailed to you takes an absolute age. I guess they’re kinda busy 😈

@stefan Good to see people boycotting ChatGPT. If you ask me if you can at all don't use any sort of Generative AI.

It's better to use real people or learn yourself than use GenAI.

@VANTABlack2000 Absolutely!

I guess we'll have to take our wins where we get them.

@stefan I did cancel my subscription as well after some of the posts from Rutger Bregman. It’s important to cut them revenue sources, especially after their deal with Department of War.

@stefan

Yeeeah...so in order to #quitgpt...you gotta be subscribed to it first.
"The oligarchs won't see a cent of my money!"

@n_dimension @stefan

Worth noting that the campaign not only encouraged people quit ChatGpt, but also:

- encourage people keep going without
- encourage people to consider alternative services
- encourage alternative services to consider higher value for "the bottom" they're racing toward.

So while the campaign is aimed on those who subscribe, they're not the only group spoken to.

@stefan @iju

I saw David Shapiro(?) On YT the other day #quitgpt, he is one of the #Ai serious content makers... If he dropped it, it's a cause for me to take notice 🤔
