The MacBook Neo is basically the Walmart M1 MacBook Air. But new.

Their specs are a bit different: Neo has a better webcam, display, CPU/NPU. M1 Air had a better GPU, battery, a Force Touch trackpad.

Both had 8GB memory.

Both had 256GB storage.

Both were $599.

@snazzyq They must have sold SO many Walmart M1's that they made an entire product line for it to keep that income flowing.
@snazzyq Only widely available worldwide. And in cool colours. But with only one USB 3/Display port.
@snazzyq Another significant difference IMO is the lack of ambient light sensor on the Neo. I guess that means no automatic screen brightness.
(Also no backlit keyboard, either)
@snazzyq looks like the Neo’s keyboard doesn’t have a backlight 😔
@snazzyq wait what, does the Neo have oldschool physical trackpad?
@snazzyq I spent a week writing code on an m1 with 8gb of memory while the IT department at work was working on my workstation. That cemented in my mind, how irresponsible selling a mac with 8gb of memory really is.
@joe @snazzyq Sure, but absolutely nobody is going to be buying this Mac for coding purposes! I don’t disagree that it probably should be 12GB RAM and already on the A19 Pro, but still. This is for the people who wouldn’t have ever entertained the idea of a Mac because of pricing before.
@rhysmorgan @snazzyq I wasn't using xcode or running docker containers. I was writing php and node. It shouldn't be that bad.
@snazzyq so sad because the RAM and storage compromises make these products effectively ewaste from day one. My wife cheaped out and bought a base spec M1 air and very quickly hit its limits doing basic web browsing and document editing. She didn’t make that mistake again with her M4. Cost was a tough pill to swallow, but for a 5+ year computer a few hundred bucks doesn’t matter.
@snazzyq and don’t forget that USB 2 port!
@snazzyq and no TouchID for the Neo (which is a sin…)
@snazzyq that was my exact thought when I first heard about this new MacBook.
@snazzyq The thing I want now is the ability to plug an iPhone Pro into a Thunderbolt dock and launch full MacOS, ala Samsung Dex. The Macbook Neo proves the chipset can handle it, so why not?
@snazzyq Makes me think they used Walmarts M1 fire sale (that never stopped) as a case study and went, “welp, that’s the price point” and “we can do it within margin.”
