Next week, 10-day #weather forecasts will start to give us hints where skies will be clear enough to see the March 13-14 (depending on your time zone) total #LunarEclipse. It will be visible mostly in N & S America. (Opposite areas will get Sept 7 total lunar eclipse.) Lunar eclipses are visible across the entire nighttime side of the Earth, where skies are clear enough to see the #Moon. Lunar eclipses coincide with a full moonπŸŒ•, by definition. https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEplot/LEplot2001/LE2025Mar14T.pdf #astronomy #Moon #eclipse
What You Need To Know About the March 2025 Total Lunar Eclipse

A total lunar eclipse will tint the Moon red-orange on the night of March 13 or early in the morning on March 14, depending on your time zone.

#Space #trivia: each #LunarEclipse is a chance for anyone to see the curvature of the Earth without travel to high altitude on an aircraft or spacecraft. You can see for yourself that the Earth is round from the shadow we cast on the Moon, which is not the same as the regular phases of the Moon. #astronomy #Moon #eclipse #science #STEM #education
#Space #trivia: Every #LunarEclipse is subtly different. Actual shades of red of the MoonπŸ”΄ in a lunar eclipse vary because, in the shadow of the Earth, the only light shining there is refracted through Earth's atmosphere. It's projecting all of Earth's🌎 sunrisesπŸŒ… and sunsetsπŸŒ‡ onto the MoonπŸŒ• at once. Variations in particulate matter such as smokeπŸ”₯ or volcanic ashπŸŒ‹ in our atmosphere make the exact shade of red unique each time. #astronomy #Moon #eclipse #science #STEM #education
"There's a blood Moon eclipse over America and Europe this month. How to see one of 2025's top celestial events" by BBC Sky at Night Magazine @skyatnightmag - #LunarEclipse will be March 13 late PM to March 14 early AM mostly in the Americas, also a little in Europe, Africa and Australia. You can see a lunar eclipse anywhere there's clear night sky at the right time, without eye protection. #Travel isn't needed except to find clear #weather. https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advice/total-lunar-eclipse-march-2025 #astronomy #Moon #eclipse

#Space #trivia: every #LunarEclipseπŸ”΄ coincides with the time of a full moonπŸŒ•, by definition. The #Moon can only pass into Earth's shadow when it is opposite from the Sun, which is the same position as the full moon. However, there isn't always a lunar eclipse at every full moon because it's only when the orbits align, up to twice a year. There is no lunar eclipse when the full moon misses Earth's shadow passing above or below. Next lunar eclipse Mar 13-14, 2025. #astronomy #eclipse #science

Late winter/early spring #weather doesn't look like it will cooperate with total #LunarEclipse viewing on Thursday evening & Friday morning in the western USA. And we knew for this time of year that was a possibility. Good luck finding breaks in the clouds if you can. #astronomy #Moon #eclipse
"Get ready to see a total lunar eclipse (or maybe not)" by @cosmiclog / @alanboyle - #LunarEclipse coming to N & S America on night of March 13-14. Will #weather let you see it? Chances aren't good in the western US - but give it a try. Webcasts will have live coverage too. https://cosmiclog.com/2025/03/12/get-ready-to-see-a-total-lunar-eclipse-or-maybe-not/ #astronomy #Moon #eclipse
Get ready to see a total lunar eclipse (or maybe not)

The first total lunar eclipse since 2022 will turn the full moon an eerie shade of red on the night of March 13-14 β€” but your chances of seeing it with your own eyes will depend on where you …

NWS said 80% cloud cover in #Portland at #LunarEclipse time. So this is better than expected. #astronomy #photography #Moon
But clouds came back in a hurry. Maybe #NWS was on to something.πŸ€” Typical #Portland / #PNW spring #weather. I got some pictures and I'll download them shortly. #LunarEclipse #astronomy #MoonπŸ”΄
This is the best image I got just as totality began and before the clouds swooped back in and ended the festivities early here. Any pictures at all were better than the #weather forecast led us to expect. #Portland #PNW #LunarEclipse #astronomy #photography #MoonπŸ”΄
"Photographer’s Once-in-a-Lifetime Shots of the Lunar Eclipse and Aurora" by @PetaPixel - A photographer from Nevada took a chance on the possibility to capture the total #LunarEclipse with #AuroraBorealis. Eclipses always happen on schedule. But #weather may not cooperate. Especially unlikely for #spaceweather. But it worked. https://petapixel.com/2025/03/17/photographers-once-in-a-lifetime-shots-of-the-lunar-eclipse-and-aurora/ #MoonπŸ”΄ #aurora #astronomy #photography #space

The total #LunarEclipse of Sunday, September 7 will be visible in almost the opposite regions of the world from the March 14 eclipse. I saw the one in March. (Scroll back in this thread.) It's your turn if you weren't in its area last time! The Full Moon will cross Earth's shadow and be visible anywhere with clear weather on the night side of Earth. Graphic from "Eclipse Wise" atlas by the late Fred Espenak "Mr Eclipse". https://www.eclipsewise.com/lunar/LEprime/2001-2100/LE2025Sep07Tprime.html #MoonπŸ”΄ #astronomy #photography #space
#NASA posted info on the total #LunarEclipseπŸ”΄ of March 3, 2026 UTC. When the #MoonπŸŒ• crosses through Earth's shadow, it would have no light shining on it at all, except that Earth's sunrises & sunsets all project on it. So the Moon always turns red during a lunar #eclipse. Amazing to see. Safe to view anywhere on the night side of the world where you can see the Moon, #weather permitting. Totality 3:04-4:03am PST. (US East Coast moonset/sunrise during totality.) https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/moon/march-2026-total-lunar-eclipse-your-questions-answered/ #astronomy
Typical #PNW #weather. It was overcast in Portland for the lunar eclipse. At least I know I’m in good company. #astronomy
@AstroHawk Shame. Thing about celestial events with our atmosphere, can lead to poor observations. I almost got clouded over too but drove away to find a gap in clouds but it spread towards me. Drive back home and a gap formed over my house as total eclipse was ending. Lucky viewing for me.
@Leighton Glad to hear you got to see it this time. A year ago I got a hole in the clouds and you didn't. You had better chances with it being late summer/early autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. But this is a very old problem... Meteorology got its name because people who wanted to observe meteors had to learn to forecast weather because it kept getting in their way.
