Look at this beautiful chonkster.

(Compaq SLT386s/20 from 1990.)

@mwichary Is that the SLT/286? My mum had one of those.
@mwichary Never seen that one before! That poor, lonely little Fn key…
@mwichary They don't make 'em like they used to.
@mwichary mnt reform pocket size :D
@mwichary I have just this evening reached the ThinkPad chapter of Shift Happens, and you know, I think I prefer this bad boy.
@shadychars It’s a strange form factor, between a luggable and a laptop. The keyboard is detachable!
@mwichary every physical interface there looks so satisfying. chunk, click, whirrr.

@mwichary Built in carry handle!

A story: At an Apple employee meeting, shortly after the first Mac Portable was introduced, they gave away a new Portable to one lucky randomly-selected attendee. This was quite the prize, as the machine sold for over $7K back then.

The winner as a rather petite woman who eagerly came to the front to receive her prize. When Jean-Louis Gassée handed the woman the Mac Portable she nearly fell over, and had to lug it off the stage with both hands.

@mwichary this was the first PC I ever used. My Dad occasionally brought it home from work. Definitely a solid device!
@mwichary
That is cyberdeck material.
@5ombr4 It would be cool to swap in more modern innards!
@mwichary
The case is just perfect.
@mwichary My first PC was a (used) Toshiba laptop with EGA monochrome display, 286 processor, 1 MB of RAM, 20 MB hard disk. I don't remember the model but I remember it weighed about 12 pounds!
@BoloMKXXVIII EGA forever!!!

@mwichary that power switch looks very satisfying to use. Maybe close to the flick-switch in the IBM PS/2. The kind of switches that have gravitas and make you feel “now we're in business” when toggling a machine on. Very nice.

@mwichary @KuestenKeks Kind of love this…

Quite a while back we cleared out an office and they had one of those compasqs in suitcase format with a removable keyboards on a twisted cord. I really regret not keeping it. The led battery alone was 5kg I bet.

@mwichary @KuestenKeks oh this one has that. Maybe that’s the one we trashed that day

@mwichary

The briefcase era of luggable computes 😃

That is a phone line plug on pic 4 then, I suppose?

@tsvenson Yeah, I think it’s a modem?

@mwichary

Probably came bundled with at least 3 different AOL disks 😆
