the flip side is that if a real adult government makes its way in, they can simply pour resources into oversight bodies and really empower them to work. That in no way takes away from the most likely immediate outcome that the watchdog will be intentionally nobbled and ignored.

@msdropbear Brilliant move on his part - not because I think he'd be given the job, but because the story gets some attention on the role of the new agency and what it could have the power to do if it's got good leadership. I hope they do appoint someone who will do the job properly.
