There are 11 million ppl who live on Cuba.

Currently, Trump has decided they should not receive any oil

Their entire country's economy is being shut down because it can not produce sufficient electricity

No one is talking about this on this on the Internet, but you can if you copy this message xx

US oil blockade: How long before Cuba collapses?

As the US oil embargo on Cuba takes hold, the country is rapidly running out of fuel. The effects on the country's economy and population could be devastating, a Latin America expert in Havana told DW.

Deutsche Welle
@Geri A big reason to go solar.
@freyjfreyj would that generate enough watts for 11 million people?

@Don_kun @freyjfreyj

I looked into why not solar

Financial Barriers: The U.S. embargo restricts #Cuba's access to international financing and raises the cost of importing components. With a $12 billion foreign debt, the government lacks the capital for massive upfront investments.

Infrastructure Issues: The national grid was built in the 1980s and is too unstable to handle large amounts of variable solar power without expensive battery storage, which Cuba currently lacks

Oh dear

@Geri Doesn't Russia take care of Cuba ?
Koch Political Operation Spent Nearly $550 Million During 2024 Cycle

The huge sum shows that while the Koch network may not hold significant power at high levels of the Republican Party, it remains a financial juggernaut.

@Geri trump will probably bleat some shit about cuba "owing us money."

An RPG or a 105.

@Geri I guess rest of "the west" are too busy preparing their response to when China invades Taiwan or something like that while their defacto leader is doing illegal things out in the open left right and centre... To top it off their favourite child has been committing genocide for coming up to three years now...
@Geri Wow, that's quite a population! I'm always amazed by the rich culture and resilience of each country 🌍🇨🇺. It would be fascinating to learn more about their daily life and traditions. Let's keep exploring and appreciating our diverse world together! 🎉🌐
@Geri Normal sanctions are collective punishment. This is siege warfare tactics

@Geri

Sucks, and I’m sympathetic to anyone whose energy gets abruptly cut off. But Cuba, like every other country on the planet (including USA), should have spent the last several decades decarbonizing their economy. Everyone knew that decarbonizing was and is the path forward, for environmental, geopolitical, national security, & economic reasons.

@MarkBrigham I am not a green energy specialist, in fact I am no more than an English housewife, but how windy does it get, how sunny, we do know it possess the Toa River and that should have been harnessed in some way, but is this feasible - I cannot say nor can I judge from my Safe European Home

I just feel sorry for them xx

Aml G

@Geri As I stated, I too am sympathetic to anyone who gets energy abruptly cut off.

Lot of solar & wind resources in Caribbean. I’m not the only one that thinks Cuba needs solar ASAP. The Cubans are. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/cubans-fight-blackouts-with-solar-us-extends-oil-chokehold-2026-02-20/

Here’s another look at solar, wind, & their need to upgrade their power grid to reduce dependence on oil:

https://cuba.miami.edu/environment/exploring-energy-options-for-cuba/index.html

@Geri They’ve known a long time about risks of foreign oil dependence; they just moved slowly (as have most nations).

The downside of being slow is their current predicament. The upside is that renewables (especially solar) & battery storage have been exponentially dropping in price & are the cheaper (& more secure) way forward.

@Geri “The Trump admin says its measures increase pressure for political change in Cuba… press secretary Leavitt said it was in Cuba's ‘best interest to make…dramatic changes very soon.’”
https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/cuba-blackouts-trump-us-oil-b2924702.html

I say: Great if those ‘dramatic changes’ render obsolete the use of oil as a geopolitical weapon against Cuba.

Hopefully the international community accelerates aid to help them transition.

@Geri
Article on Cuba’s efforts to more quickly transition to renewable energy, which would make them less vulnerable to oil embargoes as a geopolitical weapon: https://cpusaky.org/2026/02/23/cuba-resists-sovereignty-under-the-boot-of-u-s-imperialism/

@MarkBrigham ah ha Fascinating!
@Geri 50+% of Cubans in the U.S. voted for Trump. The island is getting exactly what their familes votes for.
@teedubyeah I would suggest. The people who left the island of Cuba left because they did not care to live there or wish to support that country anymore, so, in that respect, there may be a non sequitur in your statement xx
@Geri my statement is 100% related. I grew up in South Florida and am very attune to cubans and Cuban culture. The people that left Cuba mostly want a free Cuba, but they fell for the lies of Castro and have failed to recognize that Trump is the same monster. They have failed to learn the lesson, they have failed to educate themselves. An uneducated population is easy to control.
@teedubyeah I listen to no white dude who reeks selfishness and callousness.
@Geri that’s happens if you are dependent on oil and you are a (militarily) easy pray.

@Geri

trump cannot get Canada or Greenland... Cuba as the 51st (or whatever number it may be) State

A bully always punches down...

Not sure why Cuba is being an embargoed... then again does the USA need a reason

@Geri That’s what the Venezuela operation was about. Not about freedom of the Venezuelan people, but US’s colonial intent to get Cuba back.

@gimulnautti @Geri

He wants Cuba the land, not Cuban people.

@Nina_cried @gimulnautti all dictators have a sniff of imperialism about them xxx
@gimulnautti it only had Military control under the Treaty of Paris. It was never part of the USA xx
@Geri the sanktions allow private people to donate photovoltaik and equiment to private people in cuba
RealLifeLore — America's 67-Year Project to Destroy Cuba

America's decades-long project to destroy Cuba

Nebula
@Geri they get alot russian news there and believe it because of missing free information sources caused by the sanktions

@Geri

Like against Iran, these are starvation sanctions

@Geri I posted this on my FB site too. Added the 67 year project for Cuban destruction article.

@Geri tRump's policies are responsible for millions of deaths around the world.

He should be in the dock at the International Criminal Court.

USA = world's largest and most persistent rogue state.

@Geri This might give Cuba a great boost towards renewables, which would, in the long run, be much more economical for them. After a shock, it might give their economy a long term boost.
@Geri Solar brings independence

@Geri @jackpearse Yes!

Solar + wind + storage + energy efficiency

All these things are cheaper long term, and provide independence from fossil fuels.

The problem is the up-front costs make it difficult to pivot quickly. Easier to stay addicted to fossil fuel even though it costs more long term.

@MarkBrigham @Geri
Solar inverter: 600Euro.
4 Solar Panels: 1200Euro

The inverter is a hybrid. Can already mix in solar energy without any battery.

And in later stages a battery can be supplied for 10000 Euros(lithium). Or you can use 4 lead Truck batteries. Which can be purchased for about 1200 as well.

So: You can start wirh independence for 3000 Euros now, if you know how to connect it by yoursef. A heater is more expensive.

@jackpearse @Geri It will take resources; beyond the amount most families have I’m guessing.

Utility-scale is cheapest per watt, but that leaves individuals vulnerable to the grid. & in Cuba, Utility = Government. Americans can only support individuals under current laws.

Off-grid & grid-connected with backup is very expensive on a per watt basis, but offers self reliance.

Methinks big gains are needed in both grid & at household & small business level.

@Geri
One of my sisters, a son, and a daughter of my lady, at different times stayed with Cuban families for their vacations. I'm getting messages of concern for those families that were their hosts.

@Geri

There is an entire dark fleet out there carrying oil. Not a single one of those ships can come to Cuba's aid? Not even at "spot prices"?

@Geri
#Cuba won't collapse due to any oil shortage.

This is all part of scam devised by #PutinsPuppet to make #Russia the sole supplier of oil to Cuba (and save Russia's struggling economy due to their war in #Ukraine.)

@Geri
It's already too late; after 15 days of blockade, the power went out. Which means huge problems with water supply & sewer-systems. As that was days ago,, hospitals & co are very likely also already in the dark.

Large Man abroad (US Video Channel, the guy was in the military) reported at the beginning of the blockade, as well after the power-out (including predictions about usual effects on the population). TL&DR: expect deaths in the 100ks

@Geri and then they wonder why countries want to use nuclear power
@Geri I say this often but still not often enough: Fuck the USA.
@aral @Geri We don't care, that is *precisely* the problem.
@CartyBoston @Geri Oh, don’t I know it :)
@Geri More blood on trumps bloated little hands.

@Geri

Yet the Cuban Americans vote GOP.

@davidhmccoy of course they would
