Who should I be following in the Fediverse? Twitter just makes me sad, and I need a new place to find people doing interesting things.

I'm interested in software development in any programming language, game development, web development, UI, design, and home lab stuff. I'm not interested in AI.

Drop your recommendations below!

Oh hi @sysop408 @tylerlwsmith !

Gosh there are dozens, dozens of us!

@sarajw @sysop408 and together we are mighty!

Plus a special call out below to some of our old Twitter mutuals. Unfortunately, some are inactive.

@andycarolan
@sarajw
@poppacalypse
@chrispian
@heyJTK
@shaundai
@shookcodes

@sysop408 @andycarolan @sarajw @chrispian @heyJTK @shaundai @shookcodes thanks for the shoutout Sheldon! i need to start being more active on here. Tyler is right, Twitter is getting sad.

@tylerlwsmith thanks for the follow! nice to meet you :)

@sysop408 great list! I just followed everyone on it that I wasn't already following 😁

@tylerlwsmith

This is a good place to find people who want to be found under certain interests: https://communitywiki.org/trunk

Once you start following people on these lists, you're more likely to be exposed to even more people that talk about your interests!

I for one post about my #homelab and #selfhosting!

@GigaByte4711 @tylerlwsmith this link is broken.

@leavex

It looks like the site is protected by anti-scrape tech and some form of captca/verification.

I've tested on multiple devices and networks, the site works.

@GigaByte4711 if I tried a VPN server in Japan, it worked. Germany and Canada, it doesn't work for me.

@leavex

Might be worth pinging one of the admins about it being unavailable there:

@Mayana

@austin

@tylerlwsmith I suggest you follow:

@SaraSoueidan
@stephaniewalter
@adactio
@tink
@SheHacksPurple
@cwebber
@jensimmons
@Floppy

And a lot more awesome people I forgot about.

@brunogirin great list, thank you! I hit the follow button for everyone on it 😊

@tylerlwsmith @brunogirin Just checking: do you know that you can follow hashtags on Fediverse, rather than just individual accounts?

That's how I found most individual people I follow β€” by seeing their posts in my hashtag follow feed.

@dmbaturin @tylerlwsmith @brunogirin What hashtags do you recommend? I'm fairly new myself and all the ones I've seen so far are low user/activity.

Edit: I found some, but still open to recommendations

@tylerlwsmith @nyrath is mostly a space guy, but he posts about other science stuff too.
@Verain hell yeah space is rad
@tylerlwsmith follow hashtags for a while, see who you find :)

@mdione @tylerlwsmith definitely second following hashtags! Also look for people you followed before on Xitter…

Also, if you happen to be on Apple platforms, buying @ivory is a huge plus! I think of this because at times you'll want to mute said hashtags and I don't think you can do that without a decent app.

@tylerlwsmith @rysiek Follow hashtags! Then you’ll see the posts about topics you like, and will find new people who post on those topics. E.G., #buildInPublic, #webDev, #programming, #devTools, #UI, #homeLab
@tylerlwsmith Lots of people on the game dev instances. @MAMG and @Exilian might both be of interest on the game dev adjacent side?
@tylerlwsmith
Me!
Pick me!
πŸ™‹
@tylerlwsmith I will just casually bookmark this thread so I can follow most people here later

@tylerlwsmith Don't forget @pluralistic, @2600 , @benbrown , @lambdacalculus , @Wrewdison , @micahflee , and @socketwench . Oooh, @catsalad as well!

TOO MANY FRIENDS! Please feel free to peruse the list of folks I follow. There are a lot of fun people to follow.

@manchicken absolutely killer list of recommendations–thank you!
@tylerlwsmith i spend an embarassing amount of time on home assistant, and mocking computer security!
@Viss sounds neat! I hit follow so I can keep up with what you're doing 😁

@tylerlwsmith sounds like you have plenty of suggestions...given your list, you have definitely come to the right place!
@tylerlwsmith
A few good ones:
* @sundogplanets is an astronomer who talks about space junk (and space junk that has become Saskatchewan junk)
* @mos_8502 posts about electronics and stuff, and is making a neo-retro game console
* @futurebird posts about ants with such joy and enthusiasm that you find yourself excited about ants too
* @sinituulia posts about cats and clothes and sewing and silliness
* @eclectech makes cute and silly pictures
* @moonrabbit makes raku ceramic spirits and friends

@silvermoon82
aw thank you, gentle friend. what a lovely group in which to be included!

i hope the snow is going ok?

@tylerlwsmith Welcome! I would suggest following some hashtags around your favorite languages, game tooling, and we dev tools and you'll pick up interesting folks to engage with and follow pretty quickly

@tylerlwsmith

I like the articles in MakeUseOf

@muo_official

@tylerlwsmith

Here is a resource. Not the easiest thing to use, but lots of accounts to follow including plenty of infosec folks.

@tylerlwsmith don't forget you can follow hashtags too
@tylerlwsmith you can follow hashtags and find people through their posts.
@tylerlwsmith Hi Tyler! πŸ–οΈ I don't usually do this when someone asks who's worth following, but your list of topics makes me want to self-nominate. Lately my posts have been about half/half between fediverse development and human-computer interaction, where I do academic work. But I've previously posted about everything you've listed. πŸ™‚
@julian yep, your timeline has some neat stuff on it! I followed so I can see more of it 😁

@AG100pct killer recommendations, I hit follow on loads of them!

@tylerlwsmith

Following people with similar interests is cool and all.

But what I like is people who have different interests and experience.

The mediaeval historian who went investigating why eels where everywhere in records of the time.

The guy trying to work out why there is a faint am radio station replaying the same songs everyday, where there shouldn't be any signal

The bee keeper
The info sec guy
People doing niche hobbies
The retro computer people

Stuff I didn't know about, but have learnt from.

Add some artists, pet pictures, nature photos etc to cleanse

@SuperMoosie @tylerlwsmith Who was chasing radio signals?

Which beekeeper do you mean?

"Surprised Eel Historian" (greenleejw) used to be on historians.social, but that instance no longer exists. I think they disappeared with it rather than migrate to another instance.

@tylerlwsmith Very likely everyone must be telling you that your query matches, well, almost everyone here? πŸ˜‚ Best piece of advice: find some people and then check who they follow if they allow it. Also, follow some super retooters like @PixelRobot and check @FediFollows

@tylerlwsmith

Many of the people I follow have been mentioned. I would also add @alice

@tylerlwsmith hi there… instead of following specific people, you may want to start by following the hashtags you’re interested in. For example, #Development #HomeLabEt cetera.

@tylerlwsmith

Take note of who's posting the stuff you find most interesting, & then follow who they're following.

Also follow hashtags. Marvelous wide-aperture net.
