This piece has been coming for a while, in one form or another. Makes me deeply unhappy to write it. https://mattgemmell.scot/the-fallen-apple/
The Fallen Apple — Matt Gemmell

I barely recognise the company I used to have such admiration for.

Matt Gemmell

@mattgemmell Damn this was an uncomfortable read, especially for a current employee. 👀

I remember modding Windows XP to look like Mac OS X Leopard. I was glued to my Sony VAIO every Apple Keynote, wishing I could transform my shitty computer to a MacBook Pro LOL! My, how the mighty have fallen.

For once in Apple's existence though, they truly have superior hardware and that is saving them from the last great exodus; people who rely on such devices for their work.

Deeply unsettling times.

@netopwibby I know what you mean. The actual tech is incredible — I’m on a power-sipping M4 Max with all the upgrades, and it’s sci-fi performance. But it’s a thousand paper cuts everywhere else!

@mattgemmell

"Apple is currently the GUI laughing stock of the industry"

THAT! Among all the other very valid points you make.

So sad to see #Apple core values being completely destroyed by Tim Cook for the sole benefit of a little higher stock value.

@mattgemmell Totally agree. I used only apple hardware from 2010 and now I use the last piece I will ever buy - m4 macbook pro with utter disgust as it continually prompts me to upgrade the OS (no i dont want liquid glass) and randomly starts playing outloud when I put my earbuds back in the case because I had the audacity to not use airpods.

Its taken me literal years to switch from all of apples services for photos, messages, notes, drive but I am out now and I will never, ever, return.

@implementcontrols Did you find a good replacement for photos, if you use it like we do (family sharing etc)?
@mattgemmell I’m done purchasing Apple hardware for the foreseeable future. I’m looking to shift toward Linux and European‑owned technology, and I urge others to consider doing the same. It’s time we break our dependence on American tech giants and stop feeding the very monster we helped create.
@jamesalegria @mattgemmell I wish Nothing would make a computer.
@jamesalegria Have you identified an alternative for laptops that you could suggest? I want to do the same but am struggling to identify suitable alternative hardware
@TheDonsieLass It depends on what your criteria is. For example, I'm in interested in laptops that can be configurable both in hardware and software, such as framework. But they are US owned. There are very few European based manufactures but so far I've found Tuxedo InfinityBook Pro 14 and Slimbook Slimbook Evo 14. Lenovo is Chinese, but has factories in Hungary.
@jamesalegria Thank you. A starting point for my own investigation at least
@mattgemmell Solid read, capturing most of my discomfort with the current corporate iteration.
@mattgemmell Yup, agree completely
@mattgemmell a very good article. I’m getting so tired of putting AirPods Pro back in the case hoping that when I pull them out both will wake up. The quality we once took for granted is long gone.

@mattgemmell @saschadiercks Wow, talk about timing!! I literally just finished writing a similar post I publish on Tuesday:

"The Apple I Used to Know - Apple’s moral compass is broken and Tim Cook’s silence is the loudest symptom.”

@mattgemmell Excellent read. Though I frankly doubt Cook bowing out of the CEO role will make much of a difference to Apple's focus on their stock price and shareholder value, especially if he shuffles over to become chairman of the board.
@mattgemmell Don’t forget about ads in the App Store and, soon, ads in Apple Maps.
@jsit @mattgemmell There are already ads in Apple Maps:
@mrpommer LOL I have noticed that weird bug too
@jsit Honestly, I think it’s the ever-creeping need to have “branding” show up everywhere, including where it’s pointless. (Or even user-hostile)
@mattgemmell This is the moment where Steve Jobs should come back a second time. (Second coming)
@mattgemmell Good post, Matt. I feel the same way. While I’ve been disappointed with software & design quality and attention to detail for some time, the loss of values and sickening displays of support for the fascist regime have gone much too far. I typically spend a lot of money every year on Apple gear. But no more. No upgrades or new devices. I am so disappointed.

@mattgemmell

Yeah, I think the problems actually began when Apple started paying dividends.

@mattgemmell @simonbs “The thing is, for now at least, none of this seems to matter, because the investors are happy.”

AND: there is no replacement

No other company is better for the user, technically or morally

I think the market is ready for EU based replacement, but no serious one has emerged yet

@mattgemmell the current situation feels like a huge chance for a new company to become a true competitor in this space. Maybe Valve with steamOS, maybe someone else.

@mattgemmell

The first generation builds.
The second generation maintains.
The third generation squanders.

I would be very surprised if it will be different here.

At the first update that proudly announced new emojis I felt a pang of shame. OS X is supposed to be the choice of developers. They really need to hold on to that, and get out there with the "whatever you can do with *nix you can do on OS X". Make the future on it. Etc. Not keep pandering to adult children with brightly-coloured baubles.
@mattgemmell Just catching up with this now. It’s a great piece. But also: “in every sense except the financial”. It would of course be hyperbolic to argue financial bankruptcy is in Apple’s future, but the path you plot does at the very least – if history is a guide – suggest a possibility sharply declining fortunes there too. I hope Apple refinds its mojo. I fear it won’t.
@mattgemmell needs to be said. I hope all the Apple tech pundits don't have collective amnesia when the annual score card voting comes around.
@mattgemmell Good writing though. And this needs to be said. It's been a long time coming

@mattgemmell

(Sigh) yeah.... Tim has betrayed us and failed us.

I've been an Apple supporter and user since the 80's and now I'm looking at what options I have for phones that are neither Apple or google connected for when I replace my phone in a year---
