In recent days the #Trump admin has slammed the door on every possible avenue of global cooperation on the #environment. At the same time, it is sending the message that it wants the world to be awash in #FossilFuels sold by the #US, no matter the consequences.

The moves follow one of the hottest years on record, during which scientists say #ClimateChange supercharged raging #wildfires in Los Angeles, deadly #flooding in Texas, & a Category 5 #hurricane that ravaged Caribbean islands.

The planet is on course to heat up more than 1.5°C (2.7°F) compared with preindustrial levels. That’s the threshold beyond which scientists say the risks of catastrophic #storms, #droughts, #wildfires & #HeatWaves, as well as #species #extinction, increase significantly. The Earth has already warmed by 1.3–1.4°C.

Under #Trump, the #UnitedStates has become the only nation to renege on a pledge to try to keep warming to 1.5°. Its actions will make the global fight harder.

But last year, after #Trump returned to the White House, emissions rose 1.9%, according to the federal government.

Those moves capped a year in which the #Trump admin systematically eliminated regulations designed to reduce #GreenhouseGases & gutted federal subsidies that could have brought more #wind & #solar power onto the #grid. With #Republican allies in #Congress, the admin erased incentives to help consumers switch to #nonpolluting #ElectricVehicles from #gasoline-burning cars. At the same time, federal agencies imposed new policies making it easier & cheaper to produce & burn #oil, #gas & #coal.

Rest of the world dumps fossil fuels. Coal and oil assets become worthless as nobody wants them. US industrialisation falls behind as they are offering 19th century technology. Global emissions fall since US is the only global fossil emitter.

@Nonilex This the modern version of the horse carriage companies forcing laws so every motor car should be preceded by a walking man with a red flag. Horse breeders, haul companies and manure merchants were against the motor once. Now it is the same again. Times are changing fast and we are already at a paradigm breakpoint and a whole old energy industry and their investors are trying to impede it, but we are now at the point where the new technology has exponential grow. Gonna be sad to watch.
