@FediTips has lots of good tips but I think the easiest way is to follow hashtags you’re interested in! Also I’m betting your local timeline will have lots of people you share interests with!
Some mastodon classic hashtags just for lighthearted content are:
Caturday
Bloomscrolling
Asstodon
Lichensubscribe
Mondog
Have fun and happy scrolling!
@holger
Follow interesting people, especially noisy interesting people who repost a lot of things.
@dgoldsmith and @catsalad are very noisy and they helped me find things.
Also recommend checking out the accounts in https://about.fedigroups.social/directory
Those are accounts that will boost any post they are tagged in so they work similarly to hashtags except they will push posts to your instance.
When you follow a hashtag, the post will only show up in your feed if it makes it to your instance (so if it was posted or boosted by someone who has a follower on your instance), when you follow a fedigroup it will guarantee that posts make it to your instance.
Yes, there are lots of ways to discover things on here! I've tried to do a full list at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accounts-to-follow-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-how-do-i-find-my-friends
There's also a list of ways to make your own account more discoverable at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-get-more-followers-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse/
@pj While listening to the Search Engine episode, I was on the back porch packing up Christmas lights.
(850K image; you're welcome.)
Umm, it has been here for a decade..
@pj Hi! Can I give a discovery suggestion?
This place runs on...

Here are a bunch of details and stuff on how it works ^_^
#forkiverse Welcome y'all! Couple stuff in case you are still sorting things out:
Use hashtags. This network does not have an algorithm, so they are the main way to find content. You can subscribe to them in the client of your choice. Some people of other instances are already giving some advice.
Some random hashtags to start (I used a space so I do not disturb all of the hashtags)
# catsofmastodon - self explanatory
# dogsofmastodon - ditto
# bookstodon and # books - for bookish stuff
# monsterdon - We gather every Sunday night to watch a crappy sci-fi/horror movie. John us!
# getfedihired If you want to signal that you are looking for job.
# mutualaid if you are in a rough patch and need assistance or want to help others in a rough patch (I'd suggest you inform yourself about mutual aid before using it if you are not familiarized with the term).
Speaking about clients and apps: There are many nice and cool apps for Mastodon both in iOS and Android that add functionality (a "for you" page if you need that kind of stuff, etc)
There is an established culture in the fediverse. Please do not feel overwhelmed. We do not expect you will get everything right in day one. Just be open and kind and people will be as well. This is a diverse place. We still have work to do, but there are minorities that see this place as a safe haven for them and their loved ones. If you are a LGTBQ+ person, you may feel comfy here. Speaking about that, this network is extremely involved in the fight against transphobia.
For Mods: Get a good mod list as soon as possible. Will not bore you with the details here, but do some research about it.
Also for Mods: follow the # fediblock hashtag, it is kind of a crowd sourced alert system against instances and users with illegal/racist/bigoted content.
That One Mastodon Joke:
John Mastodon is the creator of Mastodon and the ruler of the Fediverse.
Hope this helped. Happy browsing!
re the culture here, it can change too. be nice like you would in any public place, but don't just accept others' demands re how to do things the "right way". many of us want to at least modify a lot of the accepted norms and think that needs to happen if we want to grow.
