Highly recommend reading this story about a reporter casually finding out his wife is a world Tetris champion: https://archive.boston.com/news/globe/magazine/articles/2007/08/19/bizarro_world/
@misty i remember reading this!
@misty I remember reading this; just so cool!
@lina She sounds amazingly cool and collected during the big attempt!

@misty This is possibly the sweetest thing I've ever read!

Thanks for the breath of fresh air.

@notthatdelta Isn't it great? I'm glad you enjoyed!

@misty an island of wholesomeness, much appreciated in these trying times.

I'd follow you twice if I could!

@misty I think the funniest part of this for me is hearing about andrewg holding the SMB record at a "perfect" 5:08 - as we now sit only 9 frames away from a "perfect" 4:54.265
@jrandomhacker Hahaha. How little we knew back in 2007......
@misty and it only takes a Tetris world record for the guy to accept that possibly his wife is better at packing the car....😢
Edit: the husband itself clarified he always has been totally ok with her packing skills. Sorry to misread
@CyclesSmiles @misty but loaded with a sweet New England self-deprecation I think. Nicely written.
@CyclesSmiles @misty Nooooope. I have *always* and without hesitation accepted that my wife is better at packing the car. Hands down better. Not just better, faster too.
@samueljohnson @misty thank you. I happily stand corrected in my interpretation of the story. Good for you!
@CyclesSmiles @misty 🤣 Sorry, I misread it as "a guy". 😬🤭
@misty That was a DELIGHTFUL read.

@misty I could practically hear the Summoning Salt vaporwave music while reading this (I love this article every time it comes by)

Sadly she no longer has the record, which now sits at 915 lines. https://www.twingalaxies.com/records/voting-performances/250260-game-boy-game-boy-color-tetris-dx-marathon-mode-lines-915

@fluffy The fact she’s still in fifth all these years later is really impressive, especially since she never recontested it!
@misty Absolutely! I couldn't find the leaderboard though, the TG website is so awful
@fluffy It really is, huh?
@misty oh and now I see the one I linked to is actually fourth place. https://twingalaxies.com/games/leaderboard-details/Tetris-dx/game-boy-game-boy-color

@misty this was such a fun and incredible read, thank you for sharing!
@kestral Glad you enjoyed! It’s long been a fave, and nice to see so many other people liking it.
@misty an excellent read, thanks for sharing
@misty That was delightful.
@misty love it, thanks for sharing! 💜
@misty it's been a since I read a longer article from start to finish, and what a lovely read it was!
Thank you for sharing this 👍
@misty here is the leader board with Lori in it. Just adding it because I found this article amazing.

@misty what a nice and uplifting story 😍 Thank you for sharing!
@misty
Fun read indeed.
@misty this is the most beautiful story

@misty That's a fantastic story. The end is hilarious.

"""As I go to pack the car, I realize that Lori has bought some things on the trip, and fitting them into our Jeep Cherokee is getting tricky. Then I look over at Lori, and it all makes sense. "From now on," I tell the new master of fitting shapes into tight spaces, "you pack the car.""""

Smart man! Know when your partner is clearly better!

@lyda @misty Yeah, that last line Is *chef's kiss.*💕
@misty
How many "world records" are at their current values because women have been systematically excluded from competing?
My guess? 25%
@misty Thank you! This is exactly why I enjoy fediverse , so many well written actuall articles on topics I probably wouldn't come across otherwise :)

@misty That is so cool!

And I'm so glad they kept this archive and that it's not walled off for GDPR reasons and other nonsense like that.

@misty

Absolutely loved this - thanks

@misty Thank you, that was a great read!
@misty The weirdest part of this article, imo, is that it doesn't actually allow Lori to speak. There's like...2 quotes from her, even though the article is mostly about her.
@misty I suck at Tetris but friends used to invite me to help them move because of my talent for packing stuff into the truck. The last line made me laugh.
@misty In a world of doomscrolling, this was a nice reprieve.

@misty I read that whole article. Not a single ad. omg.

Kids, this is what the internet USED to be like.

@misty this really reinforces my theory that winnipeg is so dark and cold and boring for so long its become a hotspot of people who are masters of the most tedious and nerdful domains

@misty One low key excellent part of this is talk of andrewg's Super Mario Bros. 1 5m9s run being beaten by Scott Kessler by a second in a "perfect run" as we are now actually 9 frames from perfection in Super Mario Bros 1, with average11's current 4m54.415s world record.

Andrewg himself would eventually set a world record with a 4m58.092s.

@misty I love that last line!
@misty this is the sweetest thing I have read in a while, thank you so much!
@misty Here's the cover with her beaming, presumably having won. https://www.funspotnh.com/-Articles/pc-bizarroworld.htm
@mattjhodgkinson I didn't realize it made the cover! That's great.
@misty Oh how neat. FunSpot is just a few hours from here, I should really get back there. I loved reading her story, wish there was a bit more from her in it.
@jessamyn Yes, agreed! I do get the impression from how she's described that she was a little aloof about the whole thing, seems like she took it in stride until the day of, but I wish I got a little more of her perspective.
@misty
I did a bit of creative searching on DuckDuckGo and came across this:

@misty @jackyan I will never get tired of this story
@Wraithe @misty It is just so good, isnʼt it? Love these “unsuspecting hero” tales.
@misty i think this article may have been the inspiration for the episode of the TV series "Bones" S05E09 "The gamer in the grease" there's definitely some references in there that match up with the way the arcade is portrayed and some of the characters.
@quixoticgeek Looks like that aired ~2 years after the article was written, so feels very plausible it was fresh in a writer's mind!
@misty yeah. I had to check the publish date on the article and the episode. It's the image of the guy wearing a referee shirt that made me think of it. (Am currently binge watching the series.)

@misty

The best Defender player I ever saw was a kid about seven years old who could play the game indefinitely on one 20c piece.

He stood on a beer crate to see the screen and reach the buttons.
