I was asked by a family member why it was taking so long to paste something large into a new Microsoft Word document on their computer, I sarcastically replied it was because it takes a while to upload it all to the copilot AI nonense first. And then I realized accidentally I might be right...I disabled copilot in Word and it went back to being instant again

So that's cool that Microsoft seems uploading everything you paste into a new Word doc to their servers now.

@TechTangents This is the lot who decided Notepad needs tabs, save states, and copliot...

@chloeraccoon @TechTangents

Well, tabs and save states are pretty cool.

@iju @chloeraccoon @TechTangents let's use something else for those, and keep notepad as a way to prevent restarts because there are unsaved changes in my text file.
@sassdawe @iju @TechTangents plus the fun of instead of clicking close and yes to save, all you need to do now is click file, save, then close the tab, then close notepad...
@sassdawe @iju @chloeraccoon @TechTangents use NotePad++ instead ;-)
@olibrendel @sassdawe @iju @TechTangents
In my case, that means installing it on client's machines for editing a single file.

@iju @TechTangents Yes, nothing like opening a text file to edit, and closing notepad and none of the changes are saved, as notepad just closes with no save prompt anymore, it just saves the state, leaves the original file untouched, and closes.

And then you open it up and get a load of errors as the files that were open no longer exist...

@iju @chloeraccoon @TechTangents notepad++ has done this better for decades.
@f4grx @iju @TechTangents yes, new notepad brings nothing new, and does it worse. It was much better as the simple single tasker it was.
@f4grx @iju @chloeraccoon @TechTangents
Back in the good old days, Gates and Balmer would have simply bought out Notepad++ and killed or crippled it.
@f4grx @iju @chloeraccoon @TechTangents
Nope, to be precise: Throw Wondoze out of the window, install any #Linux (i.e. Linux Mint), use #Featherpad instead of np++ and LibreOffice.
Then everything is instant, local and private and as secure as you wish.
#diday
I came from Win, used Linux in dual boot for years, loved np++. In 2019, after university, I almost completly stopped using Win. I don't miss anything. No forced updates. No bloatware. LM just works.
@Zeronior @f4grx @iju @TechTangents I'm not running any *nix to edit a single file on windows to get Sage running.
@chloeraccoon @f4grx @iju @TechTangents Use Dolibarr. Doesn't need Windoze.
Just had a look... Professional websites never tell the user where this super amazing software runs. I suppose, it's only Win?

@Zeronior @f4grx @iju @TechTangents "Use this CRM software to replace you accounting software"

Sure. Should I replace AutoCAD with Emacs too?

@chloeraccoon @f4grx @iju @TechTangents I would prefer FreeCAD. But yes, special software is still only available on Win 😢
I hope, something changes in the next years.
We would need a platform like Steam for professionals.

@Zeronior @f4grx @iju @TechTangents You prefer FreeCAD? You missed the point.

You recommended software that does a completely differnet job as a replacement.,

So you don't want to use FreeCAD for editing CAD, yoy should use RhytemBox, or Vi. Anything but CAD software.

Sorry, didn't know anything about Sage before you mentioned it. At their website, it looked like they were selling an ERP system. That's exactly what Dolibarr does.
With your answer I would think, Sage is more like SAP, one to rule them all ;)
@Zeronior @iju @chloeraccoon @TechTangents I've been using linux mint then debian for more than 10 years, and now two years at dayjob with a few vms for windoze stuff.
@f4grx @Zeronior @iju @TechTangents I started with slackware 96 (NEW! Kernel 2.0) in 1996.
@chloeraccoon @f4grx @iju @TechTangents Cool, that sounds like the days where I tried to install Linux 4.0 - had to give up and install Win95 again 🤭
But I was still a child.
@iju @chloeraccoon @TechTangents they also put text formatting in there. Like there turned notepad into wordpad and made it worse

@TechTangents After reading the first sentence I was ready to blame the 30+ years of tech debt in the OLE system. Good to know it’s just the absurdity of the AI bubble instead!

Same Office Copilot that, even in the most generous reading of the numbers, almost none of their customer base is using 🫠

@kirb @TechTangents My favourite happening at The Big M recently is they fell in line with the "return to office" thing

Which has gotta be absolutely *crushing* for the Microsoft Teams people. Effectively being told "your app sucks so hard we all have to go back to the office now"

(a completely deserved outcome for that department but still)

@CursedSilicon @kirb @TechTangents Zoom was one of the earlier ones too iirc, which is extra hilarious since that's *the whole company's* reason for existing
@CursedSilicon @kirb @TechTangents IIRC the Teams team are also back in office, which must sting twice as much. RTO mandates are often just ways of reducing headcount through resignations without actually doing layoffs and paying severance though.
@kirb @TechTangents 30 years of fixes and optimizations of pain points though. Also, imagine running Pentium 2 code on your 2025 processor where the cache is the size of the entire legacy memory system.
@keyboardg @TechTangents All true of course, but pasting taking several seconds to complete is an extremely common occurrence, then and now

@keyboardg @kirb @TechTangents Imagine running Pentium 2 code on your 2025 processor where the cache is the size of the entire legacy memory system 😍

Imagine how fast it must run on that modern machine.

@TechTangents maybe, or processing it locally.
@demofox @TechTangents That's another possibility, but unless I control the whole stack (read: that it's open source and that I can see and change everything in it) I wouldn't trust it. E.g. even if microsoft recall was all local, the summaries and descriptions could still be uploaded or leaked... all while draining much more power than needed.
@TechTangents see? AI can improve productivity… by disabling it! 🤣
@TechTangents and will be integrated into their training. Hope you don’t diary or keep medical logs in word docs.
@TechTangents Should we be surprised? :( He, like they used to say "people have nothing to hide anyway"

@TechTangents

Another good reason not to use Word.

@TechTangents libreoffice my beloved
@spycrab @TechTangents Hopefully they don't announce an "AI-focused development roadmap" or whatever, like Firefox recently did :(
@TechTangents I shall continue to not use Microsoft products.
@TechTangents thats terrifying
@TechTangents what version of word is it
@TechTangents <<<<refrains (although I'm dying inside as I do) from mentioning alternative options..... I WILL NOT say it. Nope. No Way Jose. Not Gonna DEW ITTTT.... DAMMIT!!! It HURTS!!!!!
@alandvalonline @TechTangents Feel free to say it as much as you want at my workplace!

@TechTangents

Fucking criminals and smug idiots.

@TechTangents
Wait a sec.
Do you mean to tell me that they're uploading it *synchronously* and make you wait for the response before they render the pasted text on the page?

@TechTangents
Did you check network traffic to confirm?

I'm very curious now.
Although I guess not curious enough to install Ms word anywhere.

@fedipete @TechTangents
Try it with Notepad?
@bornach I don't have windows tho
@TechTangents A good reason to turn off the CoPilot nonsense.
Well, one shouldn't need a reason at all to turn off spyware.
@TechTangents New AI poisoning method just dropped ;P
@TechTangents debuging tool: sarcasm. Sounds funny, but it works!
@TechTangents just another reason to use LibreOffice or another alternative office suite
FediFollows (@[email protected])

Microsoft Office has been replaced by "Microsoft 365 Copilot App" 🙄 (not a joke, see office.com) Fortunately there are many good alternatives on the Fediverse: ➡️ @[email protected] - Free open source office suite, can be used entirely offline ➡️ @[email protected] - Online fork of LibreOffice, upstream contributor ➡️ @[email protected] - FOSS personal cloud including collaborative office tools ➡️ @[email protected] - FOSS online office suite with maximum privacy (via @[email protected] )

@TechTangents

I have to deal with this AI at work. I'm ready to retire and become adopted by local crows.

@TechTangents
Thanks for reminding me! I had intended to kill off Copilot, and now I just did it. Although I expect Microsoft will sneak it back in somehow!
@Quasit @TechTangents
Perhaps they do like Mozilla and re-enable on every patch update
@TechTangents how do you disable copilot?!? Hated it since the day it came out but couldnt find a way for it to go away!!
@shenquan @TechTangents To disable Copilot, get rid of Windows and use a Linux distro. I'm 100% serious.

Yes, you can avoid Gen AI! How to have ZERO Gen AI on your PC and phone.

@crowgirl @shenquan @TechTangents Been a Linux user since 2009.
My regret - that I didn't go to Linux when I first encountered it in the 90s
