User: Hi! I'd like a wake up call.

Hotel front desk: The entire modern web infrastructure you rely on is held together by a handful of volunteer run opensource projects, and if one lead maintainer decides to delete their repository today, the global economy would stall by noon.

@nixCraft oh I actually thought this was a real quote from ccc
@nixCraft left-pad
@boplaid @nixCraft I guess we learned from left-pad, right? NPM doesn't allow people to delete popular projects anymore, right? People learned to cache dependencies, right? Right????

@qgustavor @boplaid @nixCraft We ainโ€™t learned shit. I research supply chain risk for work, and exposure across the board is off the charts.

I still believe technical folks would solve these challenges effectively, if not for the business decisions which led us here preventing them from doing so.

@manchicken @qgustavor @boplaid @nixCraft if you want to panic-cry look into how timezones work over the internet... Last I checked it was basically 1 guy with a "server" in his basement which controlled how most computers handle timezones. Yes time is tracked by quantum clocks. In most computers time is tracked by seconds since Jan 1st 1970 but converting to correct hour is difficult. Like dst or a town which is split in the middle by the timezone line. Spain is an hour ahead of England...
@nixCraft โ€œI didnโ€™t mean for you to keep me from sleeping at all, you know!โ€
@nixCraft
At noon I'm usually having lunch.
Could we stall at 3:00 PM, please?
@nixCraft We all rely on maintainers keeping burnout at bay. Try donating or helping a project you use.

@nixCraft

At this point I wouldn't mind seeing the global economy grind to a halt. As it is, it seems as if it's just a giant machine for killing off the planet!

@Quasit @nixCraft Whole lot of people would starve to death and die of bullshit causes. Might save the planet, but there'd be survivors and they'd have had to learn something or the planet would maybe recover a bit and then we'd be back at it.

It needs a few hundred years you know. We'd have to knock ourselves further back than the 1500's.

@nixCraft
"No, I mean, like, in the morning."

Sure, what time?

"7 o'clock"

That's fine. Do you want me to come up with something new, or should I just repeat that one?

@nixCraft

User: Hi! I'd like a wake up call.

Hotel Concierge :

  • You have a digital watch? Set an alarm.
  • You have a mobile phone with different alarm tones? Set an alarm.
  • You have an internet connected whizzbang car? Set an alarm to call your phone.
  • You're a luddite? Ok, room service will bring you an egg timer.

@sirwumpus @nixCraft

User: OK, but I don't tip for that shit.

@nixCraft oops... Wake-up phone call. K-thx
@nixCraft "By noon" seems to be WAY too long of a timeframe ๐Ÿ˜›

@nixCraft So the 99.999% need the .001% #Oligarchy #TechBros to survive.

Gotcha.

@CountHoldem @nixCraft We aren't talking about wealthy oligarchical billionaires here. We are talking about volunteer programmers making basically no money who have been maintaining basic, unglamorous software components that you, I, and the oligarchs rely on. This isn't Atlas Shrugged here.

@not2b @nixCraft So no room for more eloquent distribution of accountability, at... ANY scale?

Quite dire.

@nixCraft

Hotel front desk: It is sort of a miracle that we survived the 20th century with nukes used only twice in 1945. But now with the death of Pax Americana- which you may consider a good thing or a bad thing, it does not matter, the point is more countries will develop nuclear programs to ensure their security. With a proliferation of nukes there are more chances for simple errors. And subterfuge that might get nukes into the hands of those who intend to use them aggressively

@nixCraft hahahahaha. This one is good.

@nixCraft That's why you make sure to fork your dependencies. The financial stuff is largely regulated so the OSS used is being used as SOUP so they probably already do this as part of their QMS. A lot would stay up.

Worse would be if one of them got super pissed and decided to ruin everything. Pretty much nobody would catch on in time.
