The Second-Order Streisand Effect is a social phenomenon where if a party makes an effort to censor information, discussion and news about the censoring attempt paradoxically leads to an increased awareness of Barbra Streisand, a musician whom most Zoomers would probably have never heard of if not for the Streisand Effect
@mcc yes ;D a bit like the Jevons paradox where attempts to reduce emissions through technological improvements leads to increased consumption of energy because technological improvements
@Heliograph
Only know this by rebound effect
@mcc

@rugk @Heliograph @mcc
So who was the rebound effect named after?

Must be before my time because I've never heard of that artist.

@mcc meta-streisand vs mecha-streisand
@bencurthoys @mcc The one from South Park?
@mansr @mcc I don't know of any other giant mechanical Streisosaurs!
@bencurthoys @mcc Neither do I, but there are a lot of things I don't know.

@mansr fair enough. Yes that is what I was referring to. The word sound of "Meta Streisand" as the second order Streisand effect reminded me of "Mecha Streisand" from South Park, which was itself (I think) a reference to the Streisand effect and again has outlived the fame of the referent.

(Edit no the episode was not a reference I checked and my memory is wrong, the episode was 5 years before the lawsuit)

@mcc Would the Duck Sauce song have still been made? I have no idea
@mcc Follow up question: if it hadn't, whose name would have been used instead?
@mcc clearly, we need another wave of disco beat revival
@mcc i can confirm i am a zillennial and have no clue who she is
@hannah She's the person who the Streisand Effect is named after

@hannah @mcc

I just read this aloud to my daughter and she said she also knows Streisand from "Hello Dolly", she sings that Yonkers song in Wall-E

@mcc thus yet another generation is the wind beneath her wings....

@mcc Funnily enough, I first heard of Barbra Streisand thanks to My Little Pony. In fact, although I heard of the Streisand Effect a few years ago, I'm just now finding out it predates this 2011 episode. I thought it was a more recent thing. Then again, I'm not a zoomer anyway.

@mcc I was just thinking the other day about how Streisand's own Streisand Effect will never be topped because hers will be remembered every time someone else does one for a very long time.

It's also lolsob funny how quaint hers was in hindsight, for all that.

@mcc me, an early zoomer raised by boomers: *reads the post aloud to my wife, assuming that since she's older than me they will also know who Barbara Streisand is*
My wife: Barbara Streisand is a musician?
@mcc Do people know that Streisand was specially a singer/actor, as opposed to “some famous lady” known for being mansion-shy? It may be like the anecdotal story about kids guessing that Bob Marley was a rapper or footballer, knowing only of his love of ganja.
@mcc those same people may also wonder what Barbara Streisand’s house looks like, ironically 😀
@WiteWulf TBH I have never wondered this
@mcc "a musician whom most Zoomers would probably have never heard of if not for the Streisand Effect"
... sooo are we pretending that Duck Sauce's song "Barbra Steisand" isn't a thing n... wait that song is *15 years old*? 🧓
@glocq @mcc I'm pretty sure that song is why I know of Barbra Streisand, and I'm only 30.
@mudri ... so you're arguably not a zoomer :p
@glocq @mcc can confirm. the duck sauce song & the effect are the only things i know about Barbra Streisand
@mcc It's not "Barbara"; it is "Barbra".

@mcc Just to correct you, it's Barbra.

In any case, I have a lucky partner who's actually heard of both her and the term.

@mcc

'It's the year 13499, the only two remembered figures from the ~2000's are Jesus and Barbara Streisand.'

@mcc it is closely related to the recursive Godwin's law: It states, that if you want to be more famous than Hitler, you need to formulate law mentioning Hitler.
@mcc
I remember her!
@wannabemystiker @mcc Gonna tell my kids this was Barbra Streisand.
@mcc you can edit this to correct the misspelling of her first name.
@mcc the Third-Order Striesand Effect is the periodic spike in YouTube plays of that one Duck Sauce song

I used to have a few Barbara Streisand albums. Helluva voice. I also liked a guy MOST have no idea about: Paul Williams who was also an actor, had an album with a song I loved that he sang. I found about 6 songs I enjoyed listening to him sing. My son has all of those albums now, but check him out if you have any interest at all. He is quite short stature-wise.

@BillMcGuire @mcc If you really want to freak your kid out, have him watch "Phantom of the Paradise".

@maccruiskeen @mcc

naw. He's 43. No freaking him out.

@BillMcGuire @maccruiskeen 43-year-olds are actually unusually susceptable to being freaked out by Phantom of the Paradise, because 43-year-olds are unusually likely to be familiar with Andrew Lloyd Weber's Phantom, and will be entirely baffled to learn Paradise came first
@BillMcGuire @maccruiskeen 43 year olds who listen to Scissor Sisters will be doubly freaked out when they find out about Paul Williams

@mcc

Welp, I'm ancient I guess.

@mcc and honestly without the Streisand Effect, millennials wouldn’t know who she was without Rachel Berry from Glee
@mcc Higher order harmonics of the effect increase awareness of the following:
+ Mike Masnick, of Techdirt
+ photographer Kenneth Adelman
+ Marco Beach Ocean Resort's urinals
+ the military radio station at Pierre-sur-Haute
+ AACS encryption key 0x09F91102 9D74E35B D84156C5 635688C0
+ Trafigura dumping toxic waste in Côte d'Ivoire
+ Mark Zuckerberg is a creep
+ Scientology is rabidly abusive
+ Elon Musk's jet doesn't like being live-Tweeted on X
@mcc they’ve probably never even heard of Effect. Or any other words. Hey you, have you even heard of words? They’re all made up.
@mcc I'll take another order of that, please.
@mcc Charles Boycott: “that’s right, you fuckers! Who got the last laugh, huh!?”
@mcc I learnt about many new insteresting resources on the net exactly from censure ban lists. there's no more effective free adverticement to any resource than trials to ban it.
@mcc I'm a 1985 born German.
Your analysis is correct even for me.
@mcc She was mesmerisingly perfect and fascinating in the film "What's up doc".
